Kilo Code is one of the most flexible open-source coding agents: free and MIT-licensed, it works with your own API keys, local models or more than 500 models through its gateway at provider rates, so you see exactly what each task costs. 2026 brought big changes — a rebuild on OpenCode in April that retired the old Roo-derived extension and its orchestrator mode, and acquisition by Anaconda in July — so older reviews describe a different product. Kilo Code is an open-source AI coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains and the command line, and in 2026 almost everything around it changed. Anaconda, the Python distribution company, acquired Kilo in July 2026 without disclosing terms. Earlier, in April, Kilo rebuilt its VS Code extension on the open-source OpenCode server, retiring the code it originally forked from Roo Code; the old extensions reached end of life on 31 July. The current code is MIT-licensed, not Apache 2.0 as older descriptions say. Its built-in agents are now code, ask, debug and plan, with the former orchestrator mode replaced by subagents, and checkpoints are kept as snapshots after each message.
Kilo started in Amsterdam in March 2025, with GitLab co-founder Sid Sijbrandij as co-founder and executive chair, and raised an $8 million seed round led by Cota Capital in December 2025. It says more than five million developers use it and that it processes more than ten trillion tokens a month.
The pricing model is unusual. The agent itself is free. You can bring your own API keys, run local models through Ollama or LM Studio, use free models through an "Auto Free" option, or pay through the Kilo Gateway, which offers more than 500 models from over 60 providers at the providers' own rates. That gateway is not entirely without cost: a 5% processing fee applies to credit top-ups and Kilo Pass purchases. Kilo Pass is an optional monthly credit plan — $19, $49 or $199 — with up to 50% bonus credits. Teams costs $15 per user a month for usage analytics, shared modes, central billing and shared keys, with a 14-day trial; Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, audit logs, model restrictions and a private gateway. Cloud agents and code review run on per-second compute.
The open question is direction under Anaconda, which reaches 52 million developers and has not said whether pricing or licensing will change. For now Kilo is one of the most flexible open-source coding agents for developers who want to choose their own models and keep costs visible.
