Overview
Devin Desktop is the agentic, VS Code-based IDE formerly called Windsurf, built by Codeium and acquired by Cognition in July 2025; Cognition renamed it on 2 June 2026. It pairs a full editor and Tab autocomplete with an Agent Command Center for running the Devin Local agent, cloud Devin sessions and third-party agents such as Codex and Claude Agent. A free plan exists, with Pro at $20 a month.

Devin Desktop, the former Windsurf, is still a strong AI editor: unlimited Tab completions even on the free plan, a capable local agent, cloud agents on Pro, and the ability to run Codex or Claude Agent alongside Devin through the Agent Client Protocol. Pricing is clear at $20 a month for Pro, with daily and weekly quotas rather than credits.
The caveat is churn. The product has changed name, owner and built-in agent within two years, Cascade was removed in September 2026, and heavy users have to budget for quota limits and API-priced overage. Fine for individuals; teams should judge it as part of Cognition's Devin platform.
What we found
Windsurf no longer exists under that name. Codeium launched the Windsurf Editor, a VS Code-based agentic IDE, in November 2024. Cognition signed a definitive agreement to buy Windsurf on 14 July 2025, and its announcement said the deal brought the product, the trademark and $82 million of annual recurring revenue. Cognition's changelog records version 3.0.12 on 2 June 2026 with a single line: Windsurf is now Devin Desktop. Codeium.com now redirects to windsurf.com and on to devin.ai/desktop, and Cognition's terms refer to Devin Desktop (fka Windsurf).
The daily experience changed with the name. Users land in an Agent Command Center, a board of local and cloud agent sessions grouped into Spaces, with the full editor and Tab autocomplete one switch away. Cascade, the agent that made Windsurf's reputation, was removed on 8 September 2026 in version 3.9.19, leaving Devin Local as the only built-in agent; earlier versions of this page dated that to July. Through the Agent Client Protocol the app can also run Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode, and September releases added remote agents over SSH and sign-in with ChatGPT.
Billing moved from credits to daily and weekly quotas on 19 March 2026, and pricing now lives on devin.ai. Free has a light quota, limited models and unlimited Tab completions and inline edits. Pro costs $20 a month with frontier models from several providers and Devin Cloud agents; Max is $200; Teams is $80 a month plus $40 per full seat for up to 200 users; Enterprise is quoted, with SSO and VPC deployment. Usage beyond the quota is charged at API rates, and Cognition's SWE-2 model is free in Devin Desktop and the CLI until 16 October 2026.
As an AI editor it remains a capable Cursor alternative. Buyers should note that its name, owner and built-in agent have all changed in under two years, and its roadmap now follows Devin rather than the old Windsurf plan.
