On 2 June 2026 a routine auto-update quietly ended Windsurf as a brand: the editor relaunched as Devin Desktop, Cognition's name for the IDE it bought in July 2025. The back-story is one of dev tools' stranger sagas: OpenAI's roughly $3B deal collapsed amid Microsoft IP tensions, Google paid around $2.4 billion in July 2025 to hire the founders, and Cognition took what remained.
Plans, extensions, keybindings and MCP connections carried over in the update, but the default surface changed: you now land in an Agent Command Center, a Kanban board of local and cloud agent sessions, with the familiar VS Code-derived editor behind it.
