Trae is a polished agentic IDE with a broad model picker and genuine ASEAN fit — a Singapore operator, regional data storage, local payment methods and a cheaper Lite plan in several Southeast Asian markets. It is no longer the bargain it was: prices roughly doubled in September 2026, and Claude is not offered. Documented telemetry with the setting switched off remains a real concern, only partly answered by Privacy Mode. Good value for personal and experimental work; think carefully before using it on confidential or client code.
What we found
Trae is ByteDance's AI coding environment, first released in January 2025 and now sold as two products: TraeCode, a VS Code-based editor with a chat-led IDE mode and an autonomous SOLO mode, and TRAE Work, a desktop, web and mobile agent that grew out of SOLO in June 2026. TraeCode offers code completion, agents that build and debug projects across files, cloud tasks that run in parallel and a model picker covering ByteDance's Seed models alongside GPT, Gemini, GLM, DeepSeek, Kimi and MiniMax models; Claude is not offered, and the Seed, MiniMax and GLM models are unavailable in the United States. ByteDance has also open-sourced its Trae Agent under the MIT licence; the IDE itself is closed source.
The international service is run by SPRING (SG) Pte. Ltd. under Singapore law, stores data in Singapore and Malaysia, accepts GrabPay, DANA and MoMo, and says it holds SOC 2 certification. A Privacy Mode keeps chats and code out of training. Privacy remains the main concern: in July 2025 The Register reported a researcher's finding that the editor made about 500 network calls and sent up to 26 MB in seven minutes with telemetry switched off, and the researcher said a Discord post about it led to a seven-day mute. ByteDance replied that the setting governed only VS Code framework telemetry.
Prices rose in September 2026. Free covers automatic model selection, limited usage, 5,000 completions a month and two cloud tasks, without SOLO mode. Lite costs $8 a month, sold only in certain markets including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines; Pro $20; Pro+ $60, with three times Pro's usage; and Ultra $200, with ten times. Annual plans cost ten months' price, existing subscribers keep their old rate, and extra usage is billed in $3 steps.
