Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool: it reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands and tests, and opens pull requests, working from the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, the Claude desktop app, the web, mobile and Slack. It runs on Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. It is included in paid Claude plans or billed per token through an Anthropic Console account.

Claude Code hands substantial engineering work to an agent that plans, edits across a repository, runs tests and opens pull requests, and it now reaches well beyond the terminal, into IDEs, the desktop app, the web and Slack. JetBrains found about 39% of developers using it at work by mid-2026, the most widely adopted tool in its survey.
The cost question is limits rather than list price. Pro at $17 to $20 a month covers short sessions; daily work in large codebases usually means Max at $100 or $200, and all usage, chat included, draws from one five-hour and weekly pool. Giving an agent shell access still calls for the usual review discipline.
What we found
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It launched as a limited research preview alongside Claude 3.7 Sonnet on 24 February 2025 and became generally available on 22 May 2025 with the Claude 4 models, when it gained VS Code and JetBrains extensions and GitHub Actions support. It now runs in the terminal, in VS Code and forks such as Cursor, in JetBrains IDEs, the Claude desktop app, the web, the iOS and Android apps and Slack. It reads a repository, edits files, runs commands and tests, connects to other tools over the Model Context Protocol and opens pull requests, asking permission before it changes files or runs commands.
The product kept moving through 2026. Anthropic's feature log lists Artifacts for previewing work in progress (June), self-hosted environments in public beta (August), auto mode as the default on Pro, Max and Team plans (August) and Projects for supervising several sessions at once in the desktop app (September). The current models are Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, all with a 1M-token context window; Anthropic recommends Opus 5.5 for most work.
Usage limits are the recurring argument. Every plan works on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly caps, and Claude Code draws on the same pool as chat. In May 2026 Anthropic doubled the five-hour limits and dropped peak-hour throttling after a compute deal with SpaceX, Engadget reported. A proposed class action in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, filed in June and broadened in September 2026, argues the Max plan's 5x and 20x multipliers were marketed unclearly; it is unresolved.
Adoption is not in doubt. JetBrains' survey of more than 15,000 developers found about 39% using Claude Code at work in May to July 2026, up from 18% in January. Anthropic's own documentation puts typical enterprise cost at about $13 per developer per active day.
