CodeBuddy is a capable, inexpensive Cursor-style editor backed by Tencent Cloud, with a CLI, MCP support and team administration, and at $10 a month its Pro plan undercuts most Western rivals. The free plan is small, and Tencent does not publish which models the international edition uses beyond its own routing. The 2025 stray-code incident was a model-side bug shared with other tools rather than something unique to CodeBuddy. Worth trying for cost-conscious developers, especially Tencent Cloud users; teams with strict model or data-residency requirements should confirm the details first.
What we found
CodeBuddy is Tencent Cloud's AI coding assistant, which began in September 2023 as the Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant plug-in and now spans a standalone CodeBuddy IDE, the CodeBuddy Code command-line tool and plug-ins for VS Code and JetBrains editors. The IDE entered closed beta in July 2025 and opened to the public with the CLI that September. It offers code completion, chat, an agent mode that plans and edits across multiple files, and support for the Model Context Protocol, which Tencent calls a first among Chinese coding assistants; the CLI adds sub-agents, hooks, Git worktrees and the Agent Client Protocol. Tencent describes the models as its Yuanbao code model with automatic routing; it does not publish a full model list for the international edition. A sibling product, WorkBuddy, shares the same plans in China, and Tencent says more than 90 per cent of its own engineers use CodeBuddy.
In August 2025 users found an e-sports app name inserted into generated code. InfoQ traced it to a DeepSeek V3.1 bug that emitted a stray token and affected other coding tools too; the claim that Tencent had reported it came from a user comment, not Tencent.
The international edition is contracted through Tencent Cloud International Pte. Ltd. in Singapore. Its Free plan gives 100 credits a month plus daily activity credits, automatic model routing, 5,000 code completions and three automated tasks, and new users get 250 welcome credits. Pro costs $10 a month or $96 a year, with 1,000 credits plus 1,000 bonus credits a month, all models and unlimited completions; extra Pro credits cost $15 per 500. Team costs $40 a seat a month or $480 a year, with pooled credits, an admin console, SSO, usage controls and audit features.
The assistant itself is closed source, though Tencent publishes example agents and skills on GitHub. It suits developers wanting an inexpensive Cursor-style editor, particularly those already using Tencent Cloud.
