Codex CLI is OpenAI's open-source (Apache-2.0), Rust-built terminal coding agent that reads, edits and runs code locally in a sandbox, with a scriptable mode for CI. It runs on GPT-6 Sol/Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol and is used with a ChatGPT plan — listed from Plus at $20 a month — or an API key.

Codex CLI is one of the strongest terminal coding agents available: open source, fast, actively maintained and now running OpenAI's GPT-6 models, with a scriptable mode for automation. Its value depends on a ChatGPT subscription or API spending, and model names and plan limits change often enough that last quarter's comparisons are already out of date. Free and Go users get only limited desktop-app access. A natural choice for developers already paying for ChatGPT Plus or Pro who want agentic coding in the terminal.
What we found
Codex CLI is OpenAI's open-source coding agent for the terminal, released in April 2025 under the Apache 2.0 licence and written mostly in Rust. It reads a codebase, edits files and runs commands locally inside a sandbox with adjustable approval levels, and a non-interactive mode lets it run in scripts and CI pipelines. It installs with a one-line script, npm or Homebrew, and it is part of a wider Codex family that also includes a cloud agent, an IDE extension, an iOS app and, since July 2026, Codex inside the ChatGPT desktop app. Releases are frequent; the latest stable version appeared on 30 September 2026, and its documentation has moved to learn.chatgpt.com.
The models have changed quickly. GPT-5.3-Codex and the low-latency Codex-Spark have been deprecated and GPT-5.5 retires on 14 October 2026; Codex now runs on GPT-6 Sol and Luna and on GPT-6.1 Sol, released in late September, with a faster Astra option on the top Pro plan. Recent additions include GitLab support in Codex cloud and availability through Amazon Bedrock.
Access comes through a ChatGPT plan or an API key. OpenAI's pricing page lists the CLI from Plus, at $20 a month, which also brings cloud tasks, automatic code review and Slack integration. Free and Go, at $8, include limited Codex use with GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app, subject to rollout. Pro comes in $100, $200 and $500 versions, with no five-hour limit for now; Business costs $20 a user a month billed annually or $25 monthly, adding single sign-on and no training on business data by default; and Enterprise and Education are priced by sales. Usage can be extended with credits priced per million tokens, and API-key users pay standard API rates without the cloud features.
The CLI itself is free to inspect and modify. It suits developers who already pay for ChatGPT and want an agent that works directly in the terminal.
