How to choose an AI research or data tool
The value of a research tool is entirely in whether you can check it. A confident synthesis with no traceable sources is worse than no synthesis, because it costs you the verification you would otherwise have done yourself.
So test citations adversarially rather than reading the summary. Follow three links. Confirm the cited passage says what the tool claims it says, not merely that the source exists and is roughly on topic — the common failure is a real document attached to a claim it does not support.
Then ask what it can see. A tool restricted to open web results, one with licensed access to journals or filings, and one that reads your own documents are three different products. The first is the one most often oversold as the third.
Freshness is the other axis. Some tools search live, some answer from a training cut-off, and several present both in the same interface without distinguishing them. For anything where recency decides the answer — pricing, regulation, market data — establish which mode you are in before you trust the output.
