Vanna was one of the best-known open-source text-to-SQL tools, and its 2.0 release made it far more suitable for teams, with permissions, row-level security and audit logs. But its repository was archived in March 2026 and nothing has shipped since, so adopting it now means maintaining the code yourself or relying on a hosted service with an uncertain future. A reasonable base for teams willing to fork it; others should choose an actively developed alternative.

Vanna is an open-source Python framework that turns plain-language questions into SQL queries against a company's database. It uses retrieval-augmented generation: you train it on your database schema, documentation and example queries, and it uses those with a language model of your choice — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini or local models through Ollama — to write and run SQL on databases including Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, Snowflake and BigQuery, returning tables and charts. Vanna 2.0, released in November 2025, reworked it from a single-user demo tool into a multi-user agent with user-aware permissions, row-level security, audit logs, rate limiting, a drop-in chat web component and FastAPI integration, with an adapter for older code. Microsoft's Azure SQL team has featured the project.
Public development has stopped: the GitHub repository was archived on 29 March 2026, and the last release, version 2.0.2, came out in February 2026. The library remains free under the MIT licence and the hosted service is still online, but there has been no visible update since, and some users have forked the code to keep self-hosting it.
Vanna AI, Inc. was started in 2023 by Zain Hoda and, according to aggregators, Aditya Sudhakar, and is reported to have no outside funding.
The paid plans add admin features on top of either the open-source or the cloud version. Explorer costs $50 a month for small teams of two or three, with 20 questions a day, API access and same-day email support; Team costs $500 a month for 300 questions a day, setup help and live support; and Enterprise, priced by quote, adds unlimited questions, on-premises deployment, SAML SSO and an admin API. Annual subscriptions get 20% off, and sales are final.
It suits developers who want a self-hosted text-to-SQL layer and are comfortable maintaining archived code; teams needing an actively supported product should check the company's status first.
