Zotero is the open-source benchmark for reference management: free, no account tier required to use the core app, with one-click capture from the browser, automatic metadata extraction, a deep citation-style library, and solid Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs integration. It suits students, academics and any researcher who wants a durable, vendor-neutral library without subscription lock-in, and its documented Web API and BibTeX/RIS support make it scriptable and portable.
Caveats are modest. The free cloud sync quota is small, so heavy PDF libraries need a paid storage plan or your own WebDAV. The interface is functional rather than polished, group-collaboration and mobile apps lag the desktop experience, and AI-assisted features are minimal compared with newer research tools. For most citation work, though, it is hard to beat on value and openness.
