Overview
Tavily is a web-access API for AI agents and LLM apps, with endpoints for search, content extraction, site crawling and mapping, and a research agent. It grew out of the open-source GPT Researcher project and has been owned by Nebius since February 2026. Usage is billed in credits, with 1,000 free each month.

ASEAN Perspective
Tavily in Southeast Asia
Tavily's infrastructure is US-based with no published Asia-Pacific data residency option, and its privacy policy focuses exclusively on EU/UK GDPR and US state laws — PDPA (Singapore), Indonesia's PDP Law, Thailand's PDPA, and Vietnam's data localisation requirements are not addressed. Developers in ASEAN who handle regulated data will need to review data transfer obligations carefully before production deployment. On the positive side, Tavily's API is language-agnostic and handles multilingual web search well, making it viable for ASEAN-language agentic workflows; and its parent Nebius — backed by major GPU investment — may add regional edge infrastructure post-acquisition to serve the fast-growing APAC AI market.
Tavily is an easy default for giving an agent live web access: one API key, SDKs for Python and JavaScript, and results already trimmed for a model's context window. The free 1,000 credits a month cover prototyping, and published plans run from $30 to $500 a month before Enterprise.
Watch credit burn on advanced search and research calls, which cost more per request. Nebius ownership since February 2026 brings a larger backer but also roadmap and contract questions worth raising, and we found no published regional hosting option for regulated ASEAN buyers.
What we found
Tavily is a web-search API built for AI agents rather than people: an agent sends a query and gets back ranked results with extracted page text, ready to drop into a model's context. Alongside search there are endpoints to extract clean content from URLs, crawl and map whole sites, and run a research agent that returns a report. Its roots are GPT Researcher, the open-source project Assaf Elovic started in May 2023; the Python SDK reached PyPI that September. The company, AlphaAI Technologies Inc. trading as Tavily, is based in New York with an office in Tel Aviv, and is led by founder and chief executive Rotem Weiss.
The big change is ownership. Nebius, the Amsterdam-based AI cloud company, announced a deal to buy Tavily on 10 February 2026, and its first-quarter filing records the purchase closing on 19 February. That filing puts the consideration at $189.7 million in fair value, plus an earnout of up to $67.3 million tied to revenue targets and staff staying on. The $275 million to $400 million figures quoted at the time came from press reports, Bloomberg among them. Nebius said Tavily keeps its brand and team, and the homepage now carries a "Tavily is Joining Nebius" banner.
Pricing is published and simple. Every account gets 1,000 free credits a month, pay-as-you-go costs $0.008 a credit, and monthly plans run from $30 for 4,000 credits to $500 for 100,000. A basic search uses one credit and an advanced search two; a research request uses 4 to 110 credits on the mini model and 15 to 250 on pro. Development keys allow 100 requests a minute, production keys 1,000. Students can use it free.
Recent releases are incremental: safe search on every plan, language filtering and boosted domains all arrived in August 2026. Usage claims vary by page, from a developer community of more than a million in the Nebius release to 3 million developers on the pricing page, all vendor figures. We found no regional hosting option on the pages we read.
