Dimensions earns its place through linkage: publications tied to the grants that funded them and the patents, trials and policy documents that followed, which publication-only databases do not offer. The free account is a genuine discovery tool for personal use, with AI summaries, and a free Research GPT in ChatGPT covers open-access papers.
Everything else is institutional and priced by quote: Analytics, the API, the August 2026 MCP servers for AI agents, and Research Strategy, whose launch status Digital Science describes inconsistently. Best for research offices, funders and competitive-intelligence teams.
What we found
Dimensions is the linked research database run by Digital Science, the London-based research-software company owned by Holtzbrinck Publishing Group. Launched in January 2018, it connects publications with grants, patents, clinical trials, datasets and policy documents, so a search can follow money from a funder through the papers it paid for to the patents that cite them. Digital Science's own pages put the publication count at 160 million-plus and the grants at more than 8 million; figures differ between pages, so treat any single number loosely.
There are two products under one name. The free version at app.dimensions.ai is for personal, non-commercial use and now needs a free account; earlier versions of this page said no login was required, which is no longer true. It includes AI-generated summaries of search results and a link into ReadCube's chat-with-PDF assistant. Dimensions Analytics, the paid platform, adds full data access, organisation and funder analysis, natural-language query building and the API. Prices are quoted on request; the licence estimates printed here before could not be traced to any source.
The AI layer has grown through 2026. A free Dimensions Research GPT inside ChatGPT answers from open-access papers, with an Enterprise version for Analytics subscribers. In July Digital Science announced Dimensions Research Strategy, an agentic analytics product for university leaders that works through benchmarking and expertise questions and links every finding to its source; a resource page says benchmarking is live, while the product page still invites sign-ups for launch news. In August came two MCP servers, Dimensions Analytics MCP and Semantic Search MCP, which let enterprise AI agents query Dimensions data over a Dimensions API connection.
For an individual researcher, the free account is a capable discovery tool with grant context that publication-only databases lack. Everything institutional, from analytics to the agents, is a contract sale aimed at research offices, funders, publishers and pharma.
