How to choose an agent or automation platform
Ask what happens when it is wrong. That single question separates this category better than any feature list, because an agent that takes actions is not a chatbot with extra steps — it can send the message, move the money or delete the row.
Look for the boring things first. A dry-run mode, a step-by-step trace of what it decided and why, a hard stop before irreversible actions, and a log you can hand to someone else afterwards. Vendors demonstrate the happy path. You are buying the unhappy one.
Reliability compounds badly. An agent that completes each step correctly ninety-five times in a hundred finishes a ten-step task about six times in ten, which is why long autonomous chains disappoint in production after demonstrating beautifully. Shorter chains with a human checkpoint beat longer ones almost every time.
On the build side, the split is between visual builders and code. Visual builders get a working automation faster and hit a ceiling you cannot see from the outside; code-first frameworks are slower to start and do not have one. Choose for where the workflow will be in a year, not where it starts.
