For a Portuguese speaker, Amazônia IA is still a free, working chat assistant with a clear pitch: Brazilian cultural context, no training on user chats and in-country data processing. For developers it remains a waitlist two years after launch, and that is now a strategy rather than a delay. WideLabs told Mobile Time it reached break-even in late 2025 by turning itself into an "AI factory" that builds sovereign systems for clients such as Dataprev, with APIs kept mostly for proofs of concept.
Its "first Brazilian-Portuguese LLM" claim is contestable and no third-party benchmark exists. Fine as a free Portuguese chatbot; for building on the model, expect a sales conversation about Amazônia 360 rather than an API key.
What we found
Amazônia IA is the Brazilian-Portuguese chat assistant and model family from WideLabs, a Brazilian startup led by chief executive Nelson Leoni with co-founders Marcelo Chapper and Rodrigo Malossi. It was presented on 30 July 2024 at Brazil's national science and technology conference in Brasília, trained on Oracle Cloud with NVIDIA H100 GPUs. WideLabs called it the first large language model in Brazilian Portuguese; Maritaca AI's Sabiá models, published in April 2023, make that claim contestable.
The consumer side is unchanged and still live. Anyone can sign up with an email, Google or Apple account and chat for free, and the FAQ says paid versions with extra features may come but a free option will always remain. The site pitches fluency in Brazilian culture, says chats are not used for training and says Brazilian data is processed in-country. The developer API is still a waitlist on the public site.
The company underneath has changed more than the chatbot. WideLabs told Mobile Time in February 2026 that it reached break-even in the fourth quarter of 2025 and grew revenue tenfold, after a deliberate pivot: selling API access is now mostly for demos and proofs of concept, while revenue comes from end-to-end projects it calls an "AI factory". It names public-sector clients including Dataprev and the Rio Grande do Sul state prosecutor's office, and projects for government bodies in Chile and El Salvador; PatagonIA is the Chilean counterpart model. Its Amazônia 360 platform, launched in March 2025, packages the Golia text, Guará speech and Harpia multimodal models for client-site or sovereign-cloud deployment. In May 2026 Veja reported a US$50 million Series A in negotiation; we found no announcement that it closed. An August 2026 report said it placed second to MeetKai in a Serpro sovereign-AI tender.
WideLabs does not publish its model weights, and no third-party benchmark of Amazônia IA has surfaced, so quality claims rest on the company's own description.
