Kimi is Moonshot AI's assistant and model family. The July 2026 flagship, Kimi K3, is a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model with a one-million-token context, available in the Kimi app, the Kimi Code coding agent and a pay-as-you-go API, alongside the cheaper K2.6 and K2.7 Code models.

Kimi earns its place on capability and price. K3 is the largest open-weight model available, with a one-million-token context and weights you can run yourself under a licence that only bites on very large commercial users. The K2.6 and K2.7 Code API rates of $0.95 in and $4 out per million tokens are low, and the free plan is usable.
The caveats are serious ones. Every benchmark is Moonshot's own, and Moonshot concedes K3 trails the best proprietary models. Anthropic has alleged that Moonshot routed Kimi customer traffic to Claude without telling users. ASEAN teams should test it on their own work and settle data-governance questions before sending it anything sensitive.
What we found
Kimi is the assistant made by Moonshot AI, the Beijing company that operates it as Beijing Moonshot Technology Co., Ltd. It started as a long-document chatbot and is now a family of open-weight models with three ways in: the Kimi app and its agent features, the Kimi Code coding agent, and a pay-as-you-go API at platform.kimi.ai, the new home of the old moonshot.ai developer domain.
The current flagship, Kimi K3, appeared in July 2026. Its model card lists 2.8 trillion parameters, 104 billion active per token and a one-million-token context window, and the weights are on Hugging Face under a custom Kimi K3 License. That licence lets anyone use and modify the model, but a model-as-a-service business with more than $20 million in revenue over twelve months needs a separate agreement, and products above 100 million monthly users or $20 million in monthly revenue must display the Kimi K3 name. Moonshot is unusually candid in its launch post: K3 still trails Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol overall. Its benchmark tables are Moonshot's own.
On the API, K3 costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output, and is unlocked after a $1 top-up. The cheaper K2.6 and K2.7 Code cost $0.95 in and $4 out, with a 256K window; K2.7 Code always thinks, which adds latency. The original K2 models were retired in May 2026, and K2.5 and the moonshot-v1 series on 31 August.
Consumer membership runs from a free Adagio plan to Ultra at $199 a month. Funding has been fast: Moonshot raised around $2 billion at a valuation above $20 billion in May, and Yicai reported a further round at $35 billion in late July, citing unnamed sources.
One caveat belongs here. Anthropic's September 2026 threat report alleges that Moonshot silently forwarded Kimi customer requests to Claude, almost 300,000 in one ten-day period, and kept the exchanges for training. That is a competitor's finding, and no formal reply from Moonshot was found.
