Grok is the AI chatbot from xAI, which SpaceX acquired in February 2026 and which now trades as SpaceXSI. It answers with live access to X posts and the web, runs Grok 4.7 as its flagship model since September 2026, and is sold through The X Subscription together with Grok Bot agents, Cursor and X Premium, plus a public API.

Grok is a capable frontier assistant whose real differentiator is live grounding in X alongside web search. Grok 4.7 is priced aggressively on the API at $2 and $6 per million tokens, and The X Subscription now bundles Grok, Grok Bot agents and Cursor coding usage in one shared pool, which is good value if you would pay for Cursor anyway.
The caveats are governance and churn. Grok has open Ofcom and European Commission investigations over sexualised image generation, plans were restructured in October 2026, and the guardrail philosophy makes it a weak fit for compliance-sensitive work. Available in ASEAN in English, with no regional localisation found.
What we found
Grok is the chatbot built by xAI, first announced on 3 November 2023 as an early beta with real-time knowledge from X. Its corporate home has since changed. SpaceX announced on 2 February 2026 that it had acquired xAI, and the business now presents itself as SpaceXSI; consumer terms updated on 12 October 2026 name the contracting company as SpaceXAI LLC, a Nevada company with its principal place of business in Austin, Texas.
The model line moves fast. Grok 4.5 arrived on 16 July 2026, trained alongside Cursor; Grok 4.6 followed in August with a focus on long-running agents; and Grok 4.7, released on 21 September, is now the flagship. Its launch post claims the same price and speed as Grok 4.6 and leads on several benchmarks of SpaceXSI's choosing, including CursorBench, so treat those as vendor results. Around the chat app the family has grown: Grok Build, a coding agent; Grok Bot, always-on agents with their own computer; add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; and Grok Imagine for images and video.
Pricing changed on 12 October 2026 with The X Subscription, one plan covering Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium. It runs Free, Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30 ($300 a year), Super at $100 and Ultra at $200, with usage drawn from a weekly pool shared between Grok and Cursor. Grok Bot starts on Premium. Existing SuperGrok and X Premium plans continue unless the subscriber switches, and the switch cannot be undone. Developers pay $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for grok-4.7 below a 200,000-token prompt, doubling above it.
The looser guardrails that draw some users have also drawn regulators. In January 2026 Ofcom opened an Online Safety Act investigation into X, and the European Commission opened Digital Services Act proceedings, both over Grok being used to produce sexualised images, including images that may amount to child sexual abuse material. Teams with compliance duties should weigh that history.
