ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational AI assistant, available on web, desktop and mobile. Since October 2026 it runs GPT-6 (Sol for paid plans, Luna for Free and Go), alongside ChatGPT Work for multi-step tasks that produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and Codex for software work. ASEAN Perspective
ChatGPT in Southeast Asia
Available in all 11 ASEAN markets via the standard ChatGPT web/mobile clients. Pricing is USD-only; ChatGPT Plus is $20/mo (≈SGD 27, MYR 95, IDR 320,000). Voice and image features work without restriction. Custom GPTs are widely used by Singapore SMEs for customer support, legal templates, and internal Q&A bots.
Data residency: workloads run on Microsoft Azure US/EU regions only. For SG/MY data classified as Restricted (PDPA/PDPA), use the Azure OpenAI Service with the Singapore region directly rather than the consumer ChatGPT product.
ChatGPT remains the default general-purpose assistant: GPT-6 since October 2026, Intelligent UI answers, voice, images, deep research, and ChatGPT Work and Codex for longer agent jobs, all in one app. The free plan now offers unlimited text chats, so paid tiers mainly buy stronger reasoning, Work and Codex allowance and longer context.
The trade-offs are churn and caps. Models, plans and features change monthly, custom GPTs are slated for retirement, Go may carry ads, and Pro now spans $100 to $500. Answers still need fact-checking. Singapore buyers see local-currency prices, and OpenAI lists Singapore among its data-residency regions for business plans.
What we found
ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant, launched in November 2022, and its model line moves quickly enough that any snapshot dates fast. On 7 October 2026 OpenAI's release notes introduced GPT-6 in ChatGPT: Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol, Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna, and the Pro reasoning option runs on GPT-6 Astra. The same release added Intelligent UI, where an answer can mix text with diagrams, side-by-side comparisons and small working tools such as calculators. GPT-5.6 Sol, the July flagship, remains in the model picker.
The larger structural change is ChatGPT Work, launched in July 2026 as an agent for longer jobs. It researches, works across connected apps and files, and produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations and Sites, with scheduled tasks that can now be triggered by webhooks. Codex handles software work inside the same desktop app. In September OpenAI added dots, always-on agents with their own cloud computer, for Pro and Business Premium users, and announced a planned retirement of custom GPTs in favour of plugins.
Scale is what no rival matches. In February 2026 OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers, figures TechCrunch carried from OpenAI's own post. Larger numbers quoted elsewhere for later months could not be traced to OpenAI. Plan allowances also shift often, and OpenAI itself points users to the model picker as the reliable guide to what an account can use.
Pricing has spread out. Free now offers unlimited text chats subject to abuse guardrails. Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly only, and Pro comes in three monthly tiers at $100, $200 and $500. Visitors from Singapore see SGD 11 for Go, which carries a note that it may include ads, SGD 30 for Plus and from SGD 138 for Pro. Business seats are $25 monthly or $20 billed annually, with a $125 Premium seat. The standing caution holds: check answers before anything important rests on them.
