Meta AI is Meta's AI assistant inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Threads, Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the Meta AI app and meta.ai. Since April 2026 it runs on Meta's own Muse Spark models rather than Llama. It is free for everyday use; Meta One Core and Premium, launched in September 2026, add more image and video generation.

Meta AI is the easiest assistant to reach for anyone who already lives in WhatsApp or Instagram, and since moving to Meta's Muse Spark models it can plan, research, build slides and send daily briefings as well as chat and make images. Everyday use stays free; Meta One Core at $7.99 and Premium at $19.99 a month mainly buy more image and video generation.
It is less suited to private or professional work. It is built to draw on what you share across Meta's apps, the assistant has no API of its own, and the newest Muse agent is US-only for now. Good as a free, always-there helper; check the privacy settings before relying on it.
What we found
Meta AI is the assistant Meta introduced at its Connect conference on 27 September 2023 inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, then running on a custom model built on Llama 2. It now also lives in Facebook, Threads, Ray-Ban Meta glasses, a standalone app and meta.ai, which asks visitors to log in before chatting. Its advantage has always been placement: it sits inside apps billions of people already open every day.
The model underneath is no longer Llama. On 8 April 2026 Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced Muse Spark, which Meta says powers the Meta AI app and website and which it has since rolled out across its apps and glasses. Muse Spark 1.1 followed in July, and with it Meta AI began making plans, connecting to email and calendars, building slides, writing research reports and sending scheduled daily briefings. Voice works in 13 languages, there is a live camera mode and an incognito chat. On 12 October Meta announced the larger Muse Wonder models for developers; it says they will reach Muse, a separate personal-agent app launched in the US in September, first for subscribers.
Meta started charging on 15 September 2026 with Meta One. Core, $7.99 a month, adds more AI image and video generation plus the Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp Plus extras; Premium, $19.99, gives the largest AI allowance. Meta says everyday Meta AI stays free, and counted 15 million Meta One subscriptions and trials at launch. Prices can vary by region, and subscribing happens inside the mobile apps.
On Google Play in Singapore the app showed 4.6 stars from 2.6 million reviews and more than 100 million downloads (read 14 October 2026). The reservations are practical. Meta AI is designed to draw on what people share across Meta's apps, so anyone cautious about Meta's data practices should read the settings first, and the assistant has no API of its own; developers use the separate Meta Model API.
