Latam-GPT
Open-source LLM made in Latin America for Spanish and Portuguese
Overview
Latam-GPT is an open-source large language model led by Chile's national AI center CENIA with more than thirty institutions across a dozen Latin American countries. Based on Llama 3 and trained on terabytes of regionally sourced text, it targets Spanish, Portuguese and several Indigenous languages to reduce US-centric bias. Weights and code are distributed via GitHub and Hugging Face for researchers and developers to adapt.

Latam-GPT is a landmark public-sector, open-source effort to give Latin America a culturally grounded foundation model on a very small budget. Open weights on Hugging Face make it genuinely reusable for regional researchers, governments and startups.
As a research-driven, Llama-3-derived model it should not be expected to match commercial frontier systems on general benchmarks, and a hosted API is not its primary offering. Its value lies in regional language coverage, openness and sovereignty rather than raw capability.
