Genei was a promising early AI reader: Oxford-prize-winning, a Y Combinator Summer 2021 company, and genuinely useful to students who needed key points pulled out of dense papers. The core features, summaries, keywords, annotation and reference generation, are still advertised, and plans still start at £3.99 a month for academics.
But the product has been left behind. The website still sells GPT-3, the app has not been updated since January 2024, the company named in its terms was dissolved in 2023, and every Trustpilot review since 2022 is a billing complaint or a report of broken features. Choose a maintained research assistant instead.
What we found
Genei is a summarisation and reading tool for PDFs and web pages from a British team with Oxford roots. It won a prize in Oxford University's All Innovate competition in 2020 and went through Y Combinator's Summer 2021 batch, when TechCrunch's Natasha Mascarenhas compared its potential to Grammarly's. Users import articles, get AI summaries and keywords, annotate and link notes inside project folders, and generate references, and a Chrome extension summarises pages while browsing.
The signs of upkeep are poor. The marketing site still carries a 2021 copyright and sells GPT-3 as the most advanced language AI available. The web app's front end was last modified on 3 January 2024, although its backend still answers requests. Companies House lists Genei Technology Ltd, the company number named in Genei's own terms, as dissolved on 14 March 2023. The homepage now sends visitors to CoLoop, a qualitative-research product it calls its new analysis tool, and Y Combinator's Genei profile redirects to CoLoop's.
Prices are still published: Basic at £9.99 a month or £7.99 a month billed annually, Pro at £29.99 or £24.99, and academic plans at a 40% discount, from £3.99 a month on annual billing. Each comes with a 14-day trial. Pro adds multi-document analysis, question answering, paraphrasing and unlimited upload size. The vendor's claims that 98% of users save time are its own survey figures.
Trustpilot shows a TrustScore of 2.3 from 13 reviews (read 14 October 2026). The positive reviews date from 2021, including a biochemistry and microbiology student who found the bullet-point extraction helpful. All four reviews from 2022 and 2023 describe being charged after trying to cancel during the trial, and the newest, from January 2024, says features such as abstract extraction had stopped working. Anyone still tempted should take the trial without an annual commitment, keep a record of any cancellation, and expect no fixes; most readers will be better served by a maintained research assistant.
