A Chromium-based browser with an agent bolted onto the address bar: it reads the open page, runs searches, fills forms, and chains multi-step tasks across tabs. That's Comet, Perplexity's answer to agentic browsing. Perplexity dropped the $200/month Max-subscriber paywall in stages through late 2025 and finished the rollout in March 2026, so it's now free on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android with no account required to install. The only paid layer left is Comet Plus at $5/month, which unlocks partner-publisher content (Condé Nast, CNN, Fortune, The Washington Post) and comes free with a Perplexity Pro or Max subscription.
Security research through early 2026 is the real caveat: independent testing found Comet blocking a small fraction of phishing attempts compared to Chrome, and researchers disclosed an MCP-exploit class letting malicious servers push code through the agent. Letting an AI agent read your open tabs — including logged-in, confidential pages — by default is a genuine tradeoff, not a hypothetical one. Fine for power users comfortable with that; not yet a browser to hand to a non-technical user or for sensitive work.

Perplexity dropped the paywall for Mac and Windows in October 2025, shipped Android on November 20, 2025, and brought iOS in on March 18, 2026, completing a full worldwide free release. The browser itself is now free with no subscription and no account required to install; the one remaining paid layer is Comet Plus at $5/month, which unlocks a bundle of partner-publisher content (Condé Nast titles, CNN, Fortune, The Washington Post, Le Monde) and is included automatically for Pro and Max subscribers.
On capability, 2026 testing is mixed. A newer 'Assistant 3.0' update reportedly improved task-completion accuracy about 23% over the 2025 version and handles multi-tab workflows better, but aggregate results still put full task completion around 65%, with roughly 20% of agentic tasks needing manual intervention and 15% failing outright — numbers that track with 'useful assistant, not a hands-off agent' rather than the fully autonomous pitch in Perplexity's marketing. Price comparisons and page summaries across a handful of structured sites work reliably; open-ended multi-step tasks are where it falls down.
Security is the sharper problem. Testing from Brave, LayerX and Guardio between October 2025 and February 2026 found Comet blocking only around 7% of phishing attempts versus roughly 85% for Chrome. A more serious issue surfaced in December 2025: a vulnerability class in Comet's MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration that let malicious MCP servers achieve remote code execution through the browser's own AI agent. On privacy, Perplexity's policy has the assistant routing page content through its servers and collecting interaction data by default to improve the product — meaning anything open in a tab, including confidential internal pages, is potentially visible to Perplexity's backend while the agent is active.
It's a legitimate look at where browsing is headed, and free removes the biggest adoption barrier. But the phishing and MCP findings mean it's not yet a sensible default browser for anyone handling sensitive logins or documents.
