Gemini in Chrome is now a genuinely useful free assistant across Southeast Asia: it reads the page or several tabs, works with Gmail, Calendar and Maps, edits images and talks back, all inside the browser most people already use. The headline agent feature, auto browse, is another matter — a US-only, English-only preview for paying Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, absent on iPhone — so readers in the region should judge it on the free assistant alone. Google has published its safeguards for agentic browsing, but caution with sign-ins and payments is still sensible. Worth enabling for any Chrome user.

Gemini in Chrome is Google's AI assistant built into the Chrome browser. Launched in May 2025 for paying US subscribers and made free for US desktop users that September, it now runs on Windows, Mac, Chromebook Plus and iOS, and since June 2026 on Android phones in the US with Android 12 and at least 4 GB of RAM. It summarises and answers questions about the page you are on or up to ten tabs at once, generates and edits images with Nano Banana, connects to Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Shopping and Google Flights, saves reusable prompts as Skills and supports spoken conversation through Gemini Live. It runs on Gemini 3.1.
Its rollout has reached Southeast Asia. Google added India, Canada, New Zealand and more than 50 languages in March 2026; Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and other Asia-Pacific markets followed in April, according to 9to5Google; and Latin America and the UK came by July. Google's availability list now includes every ASEAN country, though no EU country.
The most ambitious feature, auto browse, lets Gemini carry out multi-step tasks on websites and, with permission, sign in through Google Password Manager, pausing for confirmation before a purchase or a social media post. Google set out its safeguards in a December 2025 security post. Auto browse is a preview available only in the US, in English, to adults on personal Google AI Pro or Ultra accounts, and not on iPhone or iPad.
The assistant itself is free for signed-in users aged 13 and over in supported regions. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, does not include auto browse; Google AI Pro, at $19.99, adds it; and Google AI Ultra, at $99.99 or $199.99 a month, gives the highest auto-browse limits. Work and school accounts need an administrator to enable it.
For Chrome users in the region the free assistant is worth turning on; auto browse remains out of reach outside the US.
