Copilot is now simply part of Edge rather than a separate mode, and the free version is genuinely useful: it reasons across tabs, reads the screen, talks back and, with permission, learns from your history. The more ambitious pieces are fenced off — agentic browsing needs a US Microsoft 365 Premium subscription, Journeys on mobile is US-only, and several features are English-market only — and the free tier has usage limits. For businesses, grounding it in work data means a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence. A sensible default for Edge users; Chrome users have little reason to switch for it.
What we found
Copilot in Microsoft Edge is the AI assistant built into Microsoft's browser on Windows, macOS and mobile. It began in February 2023 as the Bing chat sidebar, gained a separate Copilot Mode in July 2025, and since May 2026 has been built directly into Edge, with Copilot Mode retired. It can reason across your open tabs, see and talk through what is on screen with Vision and Voice, and, if you allow it, use your browsing history to give more relevant answers and remember context over time. Journeys groups past browsing into topics you can resume; it works on desktop in English-language markets and on mobile in the US only. Podcasts turns pages into audio summaries for signed-in users in English-speaking markets, and Study and Learn helps with coursework. Each feature can be switched on or off in settings. Microsoft cancelled a planned on-device AI history search in June 2026.
Copilot in Edge is free with usage limits, and when you reach them Edge offers paid upgrades. Agentic browsing, in which Copilot carries out tasks on websites and now called Browse with Copilot, is limited to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers in the US, at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. Businesses can ground Copilot in work data through Microsoft 365 Copilot: the Business edition costs $18 a user a month on annual billing until 31 December 2026, down from $21, or $25.20 billed monthly, and needs a Microsoft 365 Business plan; the enterprise edition costs $30 a user a month paid yearly. Those plans add Researcher, Analyst and Facilitator agents.
Microsoft Corporation, based in Redmond, Washington, ships Edge with Windows, giving Copilot a very large potential audience. Windows Central and Neowin read the end of Copilot Mode as more AI in Edge rather than less.
For Edge users it is a capable free assistant; outside the US and English-speaking markets, expect fewer features.
