ChatDOC is one of the more careful chat-with-PDF tools: every answer carries footnotes that jump to the passage it came from, tables and formulas are recognised rather than mangled, and the same parsing engine is sold to developers as an API. Pro is inexpensive at $8.99 per 30 days or $89.90 per 360 days.
The free plan, ten uploads in total and PDFs only, is enough to judge it and not much more. The operator is not named anywhere on its own site, which matters for teams with data-governance rules; the privacy policy places servers in the US. A good fit for researchers and analysts who need to check every answer against the page.
What we found
ChatDOC is a chat-with-your-documents service at chatdoc.com, running since early 2023: its public changelog begins in March 2023, when Word support and document sharing were added. It does not name the company behind it. Its terms and privacy policy refer only to "ChatDOC", give a Gmail contact address, choose US law and place servers in the US. Directory sites describe it as a Hong Kong company tied to Beijing PAI Technology (庖丁科技), whose PDF extraction product is called PDFlux, and the ChatDOC web app does load a component named pdflux, but ChatDOC itself confirms no parent, so none is named here.
The product reads PDF, Word, Markdown, ePub, TXT, scanned files and web pages, and answers with footnotes that jump to the source passage, a feature it brands TapSource. It recognises tables and formulas, translates whole documents (in beta since June 2025) and offers built-in models alongside the option to connect your own through OpenAI, OpenRouter or DeepSeek-R1 providers. The team publishes on PDF parsing, including a January 2024 arXiv paper credited to chatdoc.com and OCRFlux, an Apache-2.0 PDF-to-Markdown model released in 2025.

Earlier versions of this page quoted a review-site score, a team size and a revenue estimate; none could be read or traced today, and all three are gone. The homepage claims more than a million users. The free plan is a trial; the citation trail is the reason to pay.
