Logically, formerly Afforai, bundles jobs that usually need three tools: managing references, annotating PDFs and drafting with AI that attaches citations as it writes. The research assistant searching Semantic Scholar, Google or your own library is the part most likely to save time, though every citation still needs checking.
The free plan is a taster at five AI actions a day; Unlimited is reasonable at $12 a month billed yearly but $30 month to month. A sound choice for students writing papers; compare it with Zotero plus NotebookLM first.
What we found
Logically, formerly Afforai, is a research and writing workspace for students and academics, run by Afforai Inc. Its own story page says Alec Nguyen built the first version in 2023 as a student at Lawrence University in Wisconsin, where it spread quickly among classmates, then incorporated it, joined the Austin accelerator Sputnik ATX and moved to Texas. By its own account it passed 100,000 users, $550,000 raised and $1.2 million in revenue in 2024. The Afforai name was still in use in March 2025; by August 2025 afforai.com was titled Logically.app (formerly Afforai), and by October it redirected to logically.app.
The product combines four parts. A reference manager imports from other managers and stores PDFs, EPUBs, DOIs, URLs and Office files, with 10,000-plus citation styles and automatic bibliographies. A file annotator adds highlights and sticky notes that can be sent to the AI for explanation. A document writer offers AI autosuggest that continues a draft with citations attached. The research assistant answers in three modes: Semantic Scholar Mode, which Logically says draws on more than 200 million papers; Google Search Mode for current web information; and Document Retrieval Mode over the user's own files. Answers carry citations, which should still be opened and checked before quoting.
Pricing is two plans. Free allows five AI autosuggestions, five chat messages and five AI commands a day on standard models, with 100MB of storage and watermarked PDF export. Unlimited costs $30 per user a month billed monthly, or $12 a month billed yearly, adding advanced and reasoning models and unlimited use and storage, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Students can get an extra 50% off the first yearly plan, and larger seat counts are discounted.
For someone writing papers who wants references, reading and drafting in one place, it is good value on the yearly plan. Compare it with Zotero, Elicit and NotebookLM before committing.
