ChatPDF does one job cleanly: upload a document, ask questions, and click a citation to land on the passage behind the answer. Multi-file folders, support for Word and slide files and a no-account start make it easy for students and occasional users, and the free plan covers two documents a day.
Its edge has narrowed now that ChatGPT, Claude and NotebookLM read PDFs too, and user reviews are few, with two of nine on Trustpilot reporting charges after cancelling. Fine for quick single-document Q&A; verify anything decision-critical against the source.
What we found
ChatPDF is one of the first chat-with-your-document tools of the ChatGPT era. The site was live by early March 2023, and it is run by ChatPDF GmbH, a Berlin company whose imprint names Mathis Lichtenberger as its representative. It is still independent and still working in October 2026. You drop in a file or paste a link, ask questions, and get answers with citations that scroll the PDF to the passage they came from.
The product has grown beyond single PDFs. It now accepts Word, PowerPoint, Markdown and text files, lets you group files into folders and question them together, and translates and summarises. The same account also offers an AI writer, an AI detector, flashcards, slides, YouTube chat and a research tool, plus desktop and mobile apps. A developer API accepts PDFs up to 2,000 pages or 32 MB. The FAQ says queries are routed between GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini. No account is needed to try it.
Pricing is simpler than it looks, because the pricing URL is a 404 and the price sits inside the upgrade panel. The free plan allows two documents a day. Plus removes the document and question caps, raises the limit to 2,000 pages per PDF and 50 PDFs per folder, and uses a higher-quality model. Shown to a Singapore visitor, it cost SGD 15.99 a month, or SGD 9.92 a month billed yearly. Other limits that circulate online, such as a 120-page or 50-question free cap, do not appear on ChatPDF's own pages.
Feedback is thin. Trustpilot showed a score of 3.6 from just nine reviews, read on 14 October 2026, none from the past year; two of the nine say they were charged after cancelling. The bigger question is competition: ChatGPT, Claude and NotebookLM all read PDFs now. ChatPDF still earns its place for the side-by-side view and zero-setup start, which suit students checking a couple of documents a day.
