Samsung's Galaxy Z8 Line-Up: the Fold8 Is Not the Fold7's Successor, and That Changes What You Pay

Samsung held Galaxy Unpacked in London on 22 July and announced three foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Flip8. Singapore pre-orders opened the same evening, with general sale on 14 August.

The naming needs unpacking before the prices make any sense — because the phone called "Fold8" is not the phone that replaces the Fold7. We went through Samsung's own regional releases and put both generations side by side.

Samsung's own highlights film runs through all three devices in a few minutes. It loads only if you press play — nothing reaches YouTube until you do.

The Fold8 is a new shape, not a successor

Samsung describes the Galaxy Z Fold8 as "a fresh and exciting form factor" — a wider, shorter device that sits alongside the range rather than continuing it. The phone that succeeds last year's Fold7 in the line-up is the Fold8 Ultra.

That distinction is worth money. The Fold8 starts at S$2,498, which is S$200 below the Fold7's launch price. If you read the number "8" as "the new 7" you would conclude Samsung had cut prices. It has not; it has added a cheaper, differently-shaped option and raised the price of the actual successor.

Singapore pricing, and what actually changed

Against the Fold7's own launch pricing, the successor costs more at every tier — and the increase is not flat.

The rise triples as you climb the ladder: 3.7% at 256GB, 7.6% at 512GB, 11.1% at 1TB. A buyer who takes the base configuration sees a S$100 increase; a buyer who wants 1TB pays S$370 more than the equivalent Fold7 did a year ago.

The Flip follows the same shape — S$30 at the entry tier, S$150 at 512GB.

One number Samsung charges consistently

Across all three models and both upgrade steps, the storage increment is priced identically: S$300 for the jump from 256GB to 512GB, and S$600 from 512GB to 1TB — S$1.17 per gigabyte in both cases.

That consistency is unusual and useful. It means the storage decision is separable from the model decision: whatever handset you choose, doubling capacity costs the same rate, so you can price the two choices independently rather than trying to read a bundle.

The two halves of this line-up had different years

The Fold8 Ultra is a substantive hardware step: +13.6% battery, 80% more charging power, and an ultrawide sensor with 4.17 times the pixel count — in a body that weighs exactly what the Fold7 weighed and is 0.1 mm thinner unfolded.

The Flip8 is a different proposition. Battery and charging are unchanged at 4,300 mAh and 25W; the ultrawide is still 12MP. What it gains is 8 grams and 0.4 mm. If thinness is what you wanted, this is the upgrade; if you wanted the battery to last longer or fill faster, this year did not address that.

Two things buyers in this region should check

The Flip8's processor differs by source. Samsung's global newsroom and Samsung Singapore both list the Exynos 2600 for the Flip8, while Samsung's US release lists Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 across all three phones and does not mention Exynos at all. This is almost certainly a regional split, but Samsung has not said so. For buyers here, Exynos 2600 is the figure Samsung Singapore publishes.

The headline Automation feature is geographically limited. Samsung's own footnote is unambiguous: "Automation feature is available in the U.S and Korea, and supports English (U.S) and Korean." It is not a launch feature in Singapore or Malaysia.

Malaysia — and a price that is being misreported

Samsung Malaysia's own promotional line reads "Pre-order yours now at RM10,499!", and that figure has been repeated elsewhere as the Fold8 Ultra's starting price. It is the 1TB price. The Fold8 Ultra starts at RM8,099 — a difference of RM2,400.

What we cannot tell you yet

This is launch-day information, and there is a category of question it cannot answer. We have not handled these phones and neither has anyone outside Samsung's own testing.

• Real battery life. The Fold8 Ultra's 5,000 mAh is a meaningful increase on paper, but a larger, brighter 8-inch panel is also drawing from it. Capacity is not endurance.
• Whether the Flip8's Exynos 2600 matches the Snapdragon in the rest of the range on sustained performance and heat. That gap, if any, only shows up under load over time.
• Durability of the new Flex Titanium display structure. Samsung describes a titanium-alloy film with an enhanced titanium plate; how that holds up across tens of thousands of folds is not something a specification sheet answers.
• Whether the 4.1 mm figure means much in the hand, given Samsung's own footnote that it excludes the main screen's frame.

We would rather say this plainly than dress a press release as a review.

The caveats that matter

• Samsung's superlatives carry its own qualifiers. "Lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet" is footnoted "compared to previous Galaxy Z Fold models", and the unfolded thickness figures exclude the main screen's frame. We have reproduced the qualifiers rather than the headlines.
• Prices are RRP at launch and will move. Pre-order promotions are already below RRP on Samsung's own store, and prices have been revised after launch in previous generations.
• The price deltas are our arithmetic on Samsung's published launch pricing for both years. The 2025 Singapore figures come from Samsung Singapore's own July 2025 release.
• Cross-market comparison is deliberately absent. Comparing S$ and RM prices requires an exchange-rate assumption and ignores differing tax treatment, so we have listed each market on its own terms.
