Vapi is one of the most flexible building blocks for voice agents: pick the transcriber, model, voice and carrier, wire in tool calls and webhooks, hand calls between agents in squads, and simulate calls before they go live. Amazon Ring's move of all inbound calls onto it is a meaningful production reference.
The headline $0.05 a minute is only the hosting fee; Vapi's own calculator puts a typical stack at $0.08 to $0.13 a minute, and support SLAs start with the $29 Core package. Best for engineering teams; non-technical buyers wanting a finished receptionist should look elsewhere.
What we found
Vapi is voice-agent infrastructure from Vapi, Inc. in San Francisco: one API that strings together speech-to-text, a language model, text-to-speech and telephony so developers can put an AI agent on a phone line or a web call. According to TechCrunch, co-founders Jordan Dearsley and Nikhil Gupta, University of Waterloo classmates who had been through Y Combinator with an earlier startup, grew it out of a voice AI therapist Dearsley built in 2023, pivoted to the low-latency plumbing underneath and launched the platform publicly in 2024.
In May 2026 TechCrunch reported a $50 million Series B led by Peak XV Partners, with M12, Kleiner Perkins and Bessemer, bringing total funding to $72 million. The roughly $500 million valuation came from a person familiar with the deal, not from Vapi. The company says it has handled more than a billion calls and that over a million developers have used its self-serve platform. Amazon Ring evaluated more than 40 voice vendors before routing all of its inbound calls through Vapi, and Ring's quote on Vapi's homepage says it went from zero to production in two weeks.
Pricing is a stack, not a single number. Vapi charges a $0.05 per-minute hosting fee and passes transcription, model, voice and carrier costs through at the providers' listed rates with no markup. Its own calculator puts 1,000 minutes with Deepgram, OpenAI and ElevenLabs at $82 to $129 a month, so the hosting fee is well under half the bill. Usage-only accounts get $5 of credit, four concurrent calls and community support. The $29 Core package adds concurrency and a two-business-day email SLA, Pro costs 10% of hosting fees with a $999 monthly minimum, and HIPAA handling is a $2,000-a-month add-on.
It suits engineers who want control over every layer. Earlier versions of this page quoted a Trustpilot score, latency ranges and reviewer complaints that could not be traced or re-read, and they have been removed. Teams without developers should look at packaged receptionist products instead.
