Replika remains one of the most polished AI companions, and its 2026 rebuild brings real improvements in memory and calls. Its history is a caution: a €5 million Italian fine over age checks and data handling, an FTC complaint, abrupt feature removals in 2023, and inconsistent age ratings across app stores. Replika is an AI companion app in which users build a relationship with a personalised chatbot character that remembers details about them, chats by text and voice, and appears as a customisable avatar, including in augmented reality. In May 2026 its developer rebuilt it in what it called its biggest update since 2017, adding stronger long-term memory, proactive check-ins and follow-ups, video calls in which the companion can see what the user shows it, internet access, image generation and app integrations; the old web app is now labelled legacy. It is one of the longest-running companion apps, and the company says more than 40 million people have used it.
Replika is made by Luka, Inc., a Delaware company in San Francisco, and launched in 2017. Founder Eugenia Kuyda stepped back in late 2025, and Dmytro Klochko is now chief executive. It has faced serious regulatory scrutiny: in May 2025 Italy's data-protection authority fined Luka €5 million, citing no age verification and no identified legal basis for processing, and opened a further inquiry into model training, while in January 2025 US advocacy groups asked the FTC to investigate its marketing. Its terms bar anyone under 18 and the App Store rates it 18+, yet Google Play still lists it for teens. In 2023 it abruptly removed erotic role-play, later partly restoring it for earlier users.
Luka does not publish prices on the web; they appear only in the app. Free use gives limited access that Luka can withdraw. Pro unlocks relationship statuses such as romantic partner, voice messages and calls, selfies and image generation; Ultra, sold annually, adds smarter conversation, self-reflections and saved memories; and Platinum, the new top tier, adds real-time video recognition and training mode. The US App Store lists items from $7.99 a month to $89.99, and existing lifetime subscribers receive Ultra.
