Zeta has real scale: the Korea Herald put it at 1.5 million monthly users in January 2026, over 90% in their teens or twenties, and since May 2026 it is on app stores worldwide. The risks are content and intellectual property. Six webtoon platforms, led by Kakao Entertainment, Ridi and Lezhin, have filed aiding-infringement complaints with Seoul's Seongdong police since December 2025; Scatter Lab says two were already dismissed.
Premium models got pricier on 7 August 2026. The App Store rates it 12+ in Korea and 13+ in the US, and there is no developer API.
What we found
Zeta is Scatter Lab's interactive-story app: users write a "plot" with characters and a setting, then role-play it with an AI that improvises the rest. Chatting is free and ad-supported. Scatter Lab, a Seoul company based in Seongdong-gu, launched Zeta in Korea in April 2024 and in Japan the following month. The Korea Herald reported 1.5 million monthly users in January 2026, more than 90% of them in their teens or twenties, with 1.1 million in Korea and over 300,000 in Japan.
It is no longer a Korea-and-Japan product. Zeta's own notice dated 18 May 2026 says the app went live on Apple's and Google's stores worldwide, and on 12 October 2026 the US App Store showed 4.7 stars from about 34,000 ratings. The Korean storefront is cooler, at 3.9 from about 68,000.
Money comes from ads, the zeta pass and Pieces. The pass is ₩14,900, US$14.99 or ¥1,650 a month in the App Store, and Zeta lists it as removing ads, unlocking unlimited private creations and adding 200 Pieces a month. Pieces pay for the premium koji and luca models, which since 7 August 2026 cost 5 and 10 Pieces a turn, and for Snapshot, which turns a chat moment into an illustration.
The legal exposure is real. Six webtoon platforms, including Kakao Entertainment, Ridi and Lezhin, have filed complaints since December 2025 with Seoul's Seongdong police, accusing Scatter Lab of aiding copyright infringement through user-made characters; an earlier version of this page named the wrong companies. Scatter Lab's lawyer said takedowns happen within one to three hours of a report and that police had already dropped the Ridi and Kidari Studio complaints. Scatter Lab also built Lee Luda, the chatbot that drew a ₩103.3 million privacy penalty in 2021. A June 2026 Series D brought in Atinum Investment, SBVA and Mirae Asset Venture Investment. There is no public API.
