Pi is still one of the most pleasant AI companions to talk to, and its July 2026 relaunch added useful everyday tools: memory, reminders, to-do lists, a news brief and group activities. It is free, on the web and on iOS and Android.
It is built for conversation, not research or coding. Free use may be capped, the developer API portal is offline, and Pi's future rests on a small company whose main business is now enterprise AI.
What we found
Pi is the conversational AI companion from Inflection AI, first released in May 2023 and built to be supportive, curious and easy to talk to rather than to write code or crunch data. Its story changed in March 2024, when Microsoft hired co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan and most of the team to form Microsoft AI, in a deal TechCrunch reported at $650 million to license Inflection's models and repay investors. Inflection, now led by Sean White, refocused on enterprise customers and kept Pi running.
Pi did not stand still, as some expected. On 21 July 2026 Inflection gave it an updated experience with improvements to voice, conversation and memory, new tools for reminders, to-do lists and shopping, a Daily Brief that uses web search for news, a drafting mode, group activities for up to 15 people and guided Pi Journeys. It runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps, with voice on every platform. The earlier ability to chat with Pi through WhatsApp, Telegram and SMS has ended; those services now appear only as ways to share invitations.
Pi is free, and no paid consumer plan is published. It is not guaranteed unlimited, though: in August 2024 Inflection said it would introduce a cap on message volume for free users, and chats are saved past 60 days only if you log in. Your conversations can be exported through the Data Transfer Initiative.
The developer side is murkier. Inflection launched a commercial API and Inflection for Enterprise, built on its Inflection 3.0 models, in October 2024, but the developer portal no longer resolves and no API pricing is published. Earlier versions of this page said the API had never launched.
Pi remains one of the warmest-feeling chat companions, and a reasonable free choice for reflective conversation and everyday planning. It is not a research or productivity tool, and its long-term direction depends on a small company now focused on enterprise work.
