Otter remains one of the most complete meeting notetakers: live transcripts with speaker labels, summaries, action items, an AI chat across your meeting history and, on higher plans, CRM sync and agents. The free plan is a fair trial, and Pro at $8.33 a month billed annually ($16.99 monthly) is good value.
Weigh the pending privacy class action in the Northern District of California, where wiretap, California privacy and Illinois biometric claims survived a motion to dismiss in August 2026. Teams that meet with outside guests should set clear recording-consent practices before rolling it out.
What we found
Otter.ai is the meeting transcription service of Otter.ai, Inc. in Mountain View, California, which launched Otter as a voice-notes app in February 2018 under its original name, AISense. Its notetaker now joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet calls, or records from a desktop app without a bot, and produces live transcripts with speaker identification, summaries, action items and an AI chat that searches across past meetings. The pricing page lists transcription in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese.
Otter has spent two years repositioning beyond notes. In March 2025 it announced more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue alongside a voice-activated Meeting Agent, a Sales Agent and an SDR Agent that runs product demos on its own. April 2026 brought a “Conversational Knowledge Engine”, with AI Chat connectors to Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Jira and Salesforce and an expanded MCP server, and July 2026 brought Live Assist, an Enterprise agent that shows coaching tips during calls. Its December 2025 review claimed more than 35 million users. All of these figures are Otter’s own.
Pricing is published. Basic is free, with 300 transcription minutes a month, 30 minutes per conversation, three lifetime file imports and 20 AI chat queries. Pro costs $16.99 per user a month, or $8.33 billed annually, for 1,200 minutes and 90-minute meetings. Business costs $30 a month or $19.99 billed annually, with unlimited meetings of up to four hours. Enterprise is quoted and adds single sign-on, the API and a HIPAA add-on.
The legal exposure is real. In re Otter.ai Privacy Litigation, No. 5:25-cv-06911 in the Northern District of California, filed in August 2025, alleges the notetaker records participants who never consented and keeps the audio to train its models. On 13 August 2026 the court dismissed some claims but let the federal wiretap, California Invasion of Privacy Act, Illinois biometric and unfair-competition claims proceed; Otter answered in September, and class-certification deadlines run into 2027. On Trustpilot, read 14 October 2026, Otter scored 4.2 from 743 reviews.
