Langboat has real research pedigree: Zhou Ming's team, a Mengzi model that topped CLUE in 2021, and an open Mengzi3-13B that is free for commercial use under Apache 2.0. Its products are practical rather than flashy, knowledge bases, meeting minutes and, since April 2026, LangClaw agents that plug into Feishu, DingTalk and WeCom with sandboxing and audit logs.
The caution is scale and momentum. The open models have not been updated since 2024, the last announced funding was in 2023, and LangClaw is new with only vendor-reported results. A reasonable choice for Chinese-language enterprise work, especially in finance; ask for references before committing.
What we found
Langboat (澜舟科技) is a Beijing company set up in June 2021 by Zhou Ming, who led natural-language research at Microsoft Research Asia for two decades and was president of the ACL in 2019. It was incubated by Sinovation Ventures and was among the first Chinese start-ups built around large language models. It is still operating: its site lists 2026 products and it held a launch event at its Zhongguancun headquarters on 16 April 2026.
Its first Mengzi (孟子) model, released in July 2021, was a lightweight model of about one billion parameters that topped the CLUE Chinese-understanding leaderboard that month ahead of far larger models; the company still cites that ranking, along with a C-Eval result from August 2023. A chat model, MChat, followed in March 2023, and Mengzi GPT completed China's model filing in December 2023. In 2024 Langboat released Mengzi3 8B and 13B on the Llama architecture; the README says Mengzi3-13B-Base is open under Apache 2.0 and free for commercial use. The GitHub repository has not changed since October 2024, and the promised Mengzi3.5 is still listed as coming.
The focus has moved to agents. LangClaw, launched in April 2026, is a platform for enterprise "digital workers": staff create agents in plain language, which run in a cloud sandbox around the clock, connect to Feishu, DingTalk and WeCom, keep four layers of memory and log every step for audit. Around it sit 澜舟智库 (knowledge base and AI search), 澜舟智会 (meeting transcription and minutes, also sold with an Insta360 microphone) and 澜舟智搭 (a low-code agent builder), all offered as SaaS or private deployment.
Customers named on the site include China Merchants Bank, Sinotrans, China Mobile's customer-service arm, CICC and Huaxia Fund; the efficiency figures attached to them are Langboat's own. The last announced funding was a Pre-A+ round in March 2023, led by Zhongguancun Science City with Eight Roads and Sinovation following. No prices are published.
