Chatbox does one job well: one clean window over every model you already pay for. Paste keys for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini or DeepSeek, or point it at local models through Ollama or LM Studio, and they share one interface on desktop, mobile and web, with chat history kept on your device. The desktop Community Edition is GPLv3, so key-holders pay Chatbox nothing.
The hosted Chatbox AI plans add bundled models, web search, image generation and Work Mode; advanced models, document chat, MCP and the knowledge base start at Pro, not Lite. The free route expects you to manage keys, and quality depends on the providers you connect.
What we found
Chatbox is two things sold under one name. The app is a single chat window for many model providers: you can paste in keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter and a long list of Chinese providers, or point it at local models through Ollama or LM Studio. The desktop Community Edition on GitHub is GPLv3, and its maintainers say they sync code between it and their closed "pro" repository. It is published by Mediocre, LLC, which handles billing through Stripe and Lemon Squeezy.
The second thing is the hosted Chatbox AI service, which removes the need for keys. Plans are priced in compute points rather than messages. Lite costs $3.99 a month, or $3.50 billed annually, for 2 million points and 25 images, restricted to standard models; the vendor's own guide says advanced models are "available only on Pro and Pro+ plans", which corrects an earlier version of this page. Pro, at $19.99 or $16.70 annually, adds the advanced models, document chat, MCP connections and a knowledge base with 12 million points and 100 images. Pro+ raises that to 30 million points and 200 images at $39.99, or $33.33 annually. Each licence key works on up to five devices. A free plan gives 10,000 points a day, five images, web search and a trial of Work Mode, the agent feature.
Privacy is the main argument for the app itself. Chat history and settings are stored on your device, and the company says hosted requests are not used for training or kept permanently. Messages sent to a third-party provider through your own key fall under that provider's terms instead.
Coverage is wide: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and a browser version, though the knowledge base runs only in the desktop app. The limitation is the obvious one. Without keys or a subscription you get a light daily allowance, and the quality you see depends on the model you wire in.
