Use cases
What you can produce with Andi AI Search
- Direct conversational answers to plain-language questions, with the sources linked
- Results to read in a clean view, or summarise and explain in one click
- Separate news and image results for a query
- Searching without ads, an account or a stored search history
- Short drafts generated from search results
- Web search and page fetching for AI agents through the Andi Search API and its MCP server
Andi remains one of the more pleasant free answer engines: no account, no ads, a sourced answer above a clean list of results, and one-click reading, summaries and explanations. PCMag's current roundup names it the best free search engine, and its 87% score on Talc's 2024 SearchBench is real, if dated.
It is a very small team, so depth and support will not match Perplexity or Google. The new Search API, from free credit to $49 a month, makes it worth a test for developers who need web search for agents. Good as a private everyday search; keep a heavier tool for research.
What we found
Andi is still running. A test query on 14 October 2026 returned a sourced answer with a list of results, each with Read, Summarize and Explain buttons. The service belongs to LazyWeb Inc., which trades as Andi, and is run by chief executive Angela Hoover and chief technology officer Jed White. It went through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch and is based in San Francisco; earlier versions of this page said Miami. Searching is free, needs no account and carries no ads. A paid Andi Plus tier is listed as coming soon, with no details.
The biggest change underneath is commercial. Andi now sells its index to developers as the Andi AI Search API, with a remote MCP server for coding agents, a page-fetch endpoint and pricing based on how hard each search was. Developers start free with $5 of credit, a Team plan costs $49 a month, and enterprise plans add custom rate limits and zero data retention. Andi says the index, which it calls Trantora, covers 25 billion pages, up from the 15 billion this page used to quote. That figure is the company's own.
Andi's accuracy claim is traceable. In September 2024 Talc, another Y Combinator company, published SearchBench on GitHub, 900 questions graded by a language model, and Andi scored 87% against 80% for You.com, 71% for Gemini and 59% for Perplexity. It is a real result, but a single run from two years ago, and every product in it has changed since. PCMag's current roundup, updated in June 2026, lists Andi as its best free search engine; Andi says that is its third year of PCMag recognition.
The constraint is size. Y Combinator lists a team of two, and Andi said in 2024 that it had raised about $3 million in total. Its claim of more than a million users is unaudited. Andi suits people who want free, private, conversational search, and developers looking for an inexpensive search API to test.
