Gibbs Free Energy Calculator
Gibbs Free Energy Calculator

H = −50 000 J/mol,T = 298 K,ΔS = 100 J/(mol·K)

Method & sources
How it computes
dG = dH - T dS, from Gibbs's On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances (1876-1878) — a paper so dense it went largely unread until Maxwell championed it. Spontaneity is decided by the sign of dG at the temperature in question, which is why a reaction can be spontaneous hot and not cold.
What this tool implements
- Standard state must be stated. Standard values apply at 1 bar and the specified temperature, and IUPAC changed the standard pressure from 1 atm to 1 bar in 1982, which shifts tabulated values slightly.
- Temperature is absolute in this equation, and the sign of dG can flip with it — the crossover temperature is dH/dS and is worth reporting.
- A negative dG says a reaction is thermodynamically favourable, not that it will proceed at any useful RATE. Kinetics is a separate question and diamond is the standard counterexample.
