If you have looked up your life path number on two different sites and been given two different answers, the sites are not malfunctioning. Numerology has two standard ways of doing the arithmetic, they are both in wide use, and for about one birthday in eight they disagree. The dispute is internal to the practice and its practitioners argue about it.

The two methods

Both methods start from a date of birth and reduce it to a single digit by repeatedly adding digits together. The difference is when the adding happens.

The first method reduces the month, the day and the year separately, then adds those three results and reduces once more. The second adds every digit of the whole date in one go and reduces that.

Ordinary arithmetic says these should agree, and for most dates they do. The equivalence breaks because of an overriding rule that certain totals, called master numbers, are not reduced. Eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are held back and kept as they are. Since the two methods arrive at intermediate totals at different moments, they encounter different opportunities to hit a master number — and once one method preserves an eleven where the other has already reduced past it, the answers separate.

How often they disagree

Across every birthday from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2026 — 28,124 dates — the two methods give different life path numbers for 3,391 of them, which is 12.06%. A little over one person in eight has two defensible answers.

Two examples, both from the first week of 1950. Someone born on 4 January 1950 gets 11 by the component method and 2 by the all-digits method: one keeps the master number, the other reduces straight through it. Someone born on 6 January 1950 gets 4 one way and 22 the other, where it is the second method that lands on a master number the first never sees.

The figure depends on the convention used, which is the whole point. This calculation treats 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers and preserves them at every reduction step. Treat 33 as ordinary, or preserve masters only at the final step, and the percentage moves. Any site quoting a divergence rate without stating its convention is quoting a number that cannot be checked.

The distribution has holes in it

The arithmetic produces a more interesting result than the disagreement itself, one that numerology sites do not seem to mention.

If life path numbers were evenly spread, each of the nine single digits would occur about 11.1% of the time. Six of them do — 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 all land close to that figure. But 2 occurs only 4.77% of the time and 4 only 7.94%.

The reason is mechanical. Master numbers are drawn from the pool: every date that would have reduced to 2 by way of 11 stops at 11 instead, and every date that would have reached 4 through 22 stops at 22. Those two digits are being drained by the master-number rule, and the amounts match — 11 accounts for 6.35% of dates and 22 for 3.18%, with 33 at 0.74%.

Life path 2 is not rare because of any property of the number 2, but because the master-number rule intercepts most of the dates that would have produced it. This is an artefact of the reduction procedure and carries no information about people.

Which one is yours

There is no authority that settles this. It is a convention question inside a practice that has no standards body, and practitioners take positions on it — the argument for the component method is generally that reducing everything at once destroys master numbers that the date genuinely contains, or manufactures ones it does not.

Why a reading feels accurate either way

The arithmetic is one part of the story; the other is the text of the reading itself.

In 1948 a psychologist gave a class of students what they believed were individual personality profiles and asked them to rate the accuracy. They rated them highly. Every student had been given the same text, assembled from statements general enough to fit almost anyone. The finding has been reproduced for over seventy years, across cultures and formats.

This is not unique to numerology. A sufficiently general description can feel strikingly personal without being specific to you. How well a life path reading seems to fit is not evidence for either calculation method, because both descriptions will likely fit.

Where this comes from, and what will date

The percentages were computed directly over every date in the stated range, using the convention described above. The calculation is simple enough to reproduce, and it should be reproduced rather than trusted, because a different master-number convention gives different figures and the convention is the thing that matters.

The arithmetic does not date. These methods have been in use for a long time, and the reduction rules are not under revision.
