Writer opened a Singapore hub in March 2025, appointing a VP of Asia-Pacific Japan, signalling genuine regional intent — but the expansion is currently a sales and go-to-market presence rather than a data-residency commitment. Enterprises in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, or the Philippines operating under PDPA or sector-specific data localisation rules (e.g. MAS TRM, OJK) should confirm whether data processing occurs in-region before deployment. Two cautions. The plans page shows no Starter price and caps it at five users, so real deployments go to a quoted Enterprise contract. And the model line is churning: X5 and X4 are deprecated on 14 December 2026, after the medical and finance models went in July.
What we found
Writer (styled WRITER) is a San Francisco enterprise AI platform launched in 2020 by May Habib and Waseem AlShikh. Its pitch is that companies should run agents on models built for the job rather than wrap someone else's API, so the platform runs on its own Palmyra family. Since August 2026 the default is Palmyra X6, which SiliconANGLE reports was post-trained on Z.ai's open-weight GLM 5.2. Writer lists it at $2 per million input tokens and $8 per million output tokens, with a 1-million-token context window, and says an agent can hold one objective for up to eight hours.
The model line has been pruned hard. Writer's developer docs show Palmyra Med, Fin, Creative and Vision deprecated on 13 July 2026, and Palmyra X5 and X4 scheduled for deprecation on 14 December 2026, so anything pinned to those model IDs needs moving this year. Writer still publishes some open weights on Hugging Face, including the small palmyra-mini models under Apache 2.0 and older 70B medical and finance models under its own licence, but X6 itself is API-only.
The product around the model is WRITER Agent, reusable Playbooks and scheduled routines, connectors into company systems, a Knowledge Graph for grounded answers with citations, and AI Studio for building agents and plugging in other models from AWS Bedrock, Azure or NVIDIA NIM. Pricing is the weak spot for small teams. Starter offers a 14-day trial, caps at five users, three active connectors and five Playbooks, and its per-seat price is not shown on the plans page. Writer announced a Singapore hub in March 2025, though its about page now lists only San Francisco, New York and London, so ASEAN buyers should ask sales directly about support and data residency.
