Superwhisper is among the most complete private dictation apps: local transcription that works offline, an on-device model that tidies text without a network call, and modes that reshape speech into email, chat or code prompts. Since August 2026 every local Whisper model is free on macOS, which makes the free plan genuinely useful.
Pro, at $8.49 a month or $249.99 lifetime, is worth it for cloud models, translation and file transcription. It now runs on Windows and Android as well as Apple devices, though Mac remains the most mature version. Best for privacy-conscious professionals and developers who dictate daily.

It is made by SuperUltra, Inc., a bootstrapped six-person team in Toronto by its own careers page; earlier versions of this page placed it in Berlin. The macOS app has a public changelog back to August 2023. A Windows app followed in late 2025, and an Android app on 9 September 2026, so it is no longer an Apple-only product; one Pro licence covers Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.
Its defining choice is local processing. Speech recognition runs on the device with Whisper models, and since July 2026 Cohere's Transcribe model too, and the privacy policy says audio is not retained on Superwhisper's servers. In August 2026 the company added S1-mini, an on-device language model that cleans up and formats dictated text without a network request, and made every local Whisper model free on macOS. Cloud models such as GPT-5, Claude and Gemini are available for heavier rewriting, including with your own API keys.
Modes are the other feature that matters. A mode sets the tone and format of the output: preset modes cover messages, email and notes, a Super Mode reads the screen to adapt to the app in use, and custom modes accept your own instructions and model choice. Vocabulary lists fix names and jargon. Developers use it to talk to coding agents, and a CLI searches transcription history.
