Replit puts editing, collaboration, a managed database and hosting in one browser tab, and Replit Agent can now take a prompt all the way to a published app. Free Mode, added in August 2026, makes everyday work on Core and Pro cheaper, and the free Starter plan is still a quick way into a first project.
The catch is metering: Agent work, hosting and database usage all draw on monthly credits that do not roll over, so set a spending limit early. Strong for prototypes, teaching and internal tools; large production systems will want closer scrutiny of cost and lock-in.
What we found
Replit is a cloud development platform run by Replit, Inc. of Foster City, California. It began as a browser code editor that needed no local install, and that core is still there: projects open in a tab, collaborators can edit together, and apps run on Replit's own infrastructure. Around it the company has built the services an app needs to go live, including a managed SQL database with 20GB of storage per app (50GB on Pro and Enterprise), authentication, monitoring, more than 100 integrations and four ways to publish: Autoscale, Reserved VM, Scheduled and Static deployments.
The centre of gravity is now Replit Agent, which is reviewed on its own page. Agent 4 arrived in March 2026, the month trade press reported a $400 million Series D at a $9 billion valuation. In August Replit added Free Mode, running on OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna, so Core and Pro subscribers can chat and run everyday tasks without spending credits until a limit that resets every five hours; Replit says this lets subscribers create up to 30 times more. In September it bought Atta, a San Francisco analytics start-up, and added interactive charts to chat.
Pricing is published. Core costs $20 a month, or $18 billed annually, with $20 towards stronger models. Pro costs $100, or $90 annually, with $100 of usage, ten parallel agents, 15 collaborators and 28-day database rollback. A free Starter plan sits in the documentation rather than on the pricing page: daily Agent credits, a lighter build mode and one published app that goes down after 30 days. Hosting draws on the same monthly credits, which do not roll over.
The practical caution is cost. Agent work and hosting are both metered, so set a spending limit before relying on it. Earlier versions of this page quoted Trustpilot and G2 ratings that could not be re-read for this review and have been removed.
