Replit
Browser-based IDE with AI coding agent — build, deploy, and share code without any local setup.
Overview
Replit is an online IDE and development platform that lets developers write, run, and deploy code entirely in a browser — no local installation required. Founded in 2016, it has become particularly popular for education, prototyping, and collaborative coding. With the addition of Replit AI (formerly Ghostwriter), it became a full AI-assisted development environment.
The Replit Agent, launched in 2024, is the platform's most significant AI feature: describe what you want to build in plain English, and the Agent writes the code, installs dependencies, creates files, and deploys the application — all within the browser environment. This zero-to-deployed workflow makes it accessible to non-developers building internal tools and prototypes.
For education, Replit is used by millions of students and teachers in coding bootcamps and computer science courses worldwide. The collaborative multiplayer features allow multiple users to code in the same environment simultaneously. Replit hosts over 50 million public repositories and processes billions of code executions monthly. In Southeast Asia, it is widely used in coding education programmes in Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

ASEAN Perspective
Replit in Southeast Asia
ASEAN-region availability and pricing notes coming soon. Drop the editorial team a note via /contact/ if you can supply local context (Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia/Thailand/Vietnam).
Replit is a mature browser-based IDE that bundles editing, real-time collaboration, instant hosting/deployment and a built-in database, now heavily oriented around AI coding via its Agent. Zero local setup makes it superb for learning, hackathons, quick prototypes and teaching, across many languages.
It suits students, educators, hobbyists and rapid prototypers; increasingly also non-developers using the AI Agent to ship small apps. Caveats: it's less suited to large production codebases, compute/usage-based pricing can get expensive once you lean on the Agent or always-on hosting, and performance depends on your connection. API/extensibility is reasonable; ASEAN access is global and it's popular in the region's education scene.
Notable facts
- Replit has over 50 million public code repositories — more than most traditional code hosting platforms.
- The Replit Agent can go from a text description to a deployed web application in under 60 seconds without a single line of code written by the user.
- Replit runs code from over 50 programming languages in the same browser environment, making it one of the most polyglot development platforms in existence.
