Pixelcut earned its following doing one job well: turning a phone photo of a product into something that looks shot in a lightbox, through one-tap background removal, AI backgrounds and batch exports built for marketplace sellers rather than professional photographers. It has since added generative fill, video background removal and generation through third-party models, and the brief 2026 rename to Pixa has been undone, so you will find it under Pixelcut again. App-store ratings are high (4.7 on iOS, 4.2 on Android), but Trustpilot reviewers repeatedly complain about being charged after a free trial, so read the trial terms before entering a card. The free plan exports without a watermark, and Pro costs $10 a month or $8 yearly. Fine for solo sellers and dropshippers who need repeatable, cheap product images quickly; developers can use its API or Claude connector.
What we found
Pixelcut is a mobile-first AI photo editor built for small online sellers: one-tap background removal, AI backgrounds and shadows, upscaling, generative fill and batch editing, now joined by video background removal and image and video generation through third-party models such as FLUX.2, Veo 3.1, Kling and Runway. In March 2026 the San Francisco company, founded by Dominique Yahyavi and Prasanth Veerina, renamed itself Pixa and moved to pixa.com. That did not last: Pixelcut now says it has "gone back to Pixelcut", same app and account, and pixa.com redirects to pixelcut.ai. Reviews and listings under either name refer to the same product.
App-store ratings remain strong — 4.7 out of 5 from about 220,000 ratings on Apple's App Store and 4.2 from roughly 244,000 on Google Play, where it has more than 10 million downloads. Trustpilot is the outlier: 69 reviews averaging 1.7, most of them complaints about billing after free trials, including one from the Philippines describing a small promotional charge followed by a far larger debit. G2 lists the product but has no reviews; the description there is Pixelcut's own. Venture firm a16z placed Pixelcut in its March 2026 ranking of top generative-AI consumer web products. Pixelcut's own audience figures disagree from page to page, so we do not repeat them.
The free plan offers limited background removal and upscaling with watermark-free exports, and video background removal downloads free at 720p. Pro costs $10 a month, or $8 billed yearly, for 600 AI credits, unlimited background removal and upscaling, a three-person team, 1,000 batch exports and a commercial licence. Business starts at $30 a month for 3,600 credits and ten people, scaling to 180,000 credits for $1,200. A separate API charges a cent a credit, with background removal at five credits, and an MCP connector lets Claude call Pixelcut's tools directly. The web app is available in Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. Check trial terms carefully before entering card details.
