You can use it in the browser with no account, and it has a simple public API, which is what most people come for. The site and API are the work of an independent developer, the same one behind Huemint, and no company or founding date is published.
The web tool works like most generators: generate five colours, lock the ones you like, regenerate the rest. You can also pull a palette from an uploaded image and preview colours on a few website and UI templates. The interface is plain and functional rather than polished, and the site carries Carbon ads.
Its distinctive feature is the rotating set of models. Two, "default" and "ui", are always available; the others change every day, drawing on sources such as a particular film or kind of photography, and a list endpoint tells you which are live. The service goes down for about thirty seconds each day while new models load, which matters if you call it from production code.
The API is a single endpoint. You post a model name and, optionally, the colours you want to keep, marking the blanks, and it returns a full palette as RGB values. There is no key and no sign-up. The terms are narrower than "free" suggests, though: the API is free for personal and non-commercial use, and commercial applications are asked to get in touch by email. Earlier versions of this page left out that condition and said Colormind had no competition as a free API; Huemint offers one on similar non-commercial terms.
As a design tool, Colormind is slower than Coolors and, unlike Huemint, does not assign colours to roles in a layout.
