Coolors remains one of the quickest ways to browse and refine a colour palette, and its image picker, visualiser and exports cover most practical work. The free plan is fine for exploring but tighter than it looks: five-colour palettes, ten saves, one project and ads, with the palette contrast checker held back for Pro.
At $3 a month billed annually Pro is cheap and removes all of that; the AI credits are a bonus rather than the draw. It does not assign colours to roles, so if you want the tool to choose the background and text for you, Huemint fits better.
What we found
Coolors is a colour palette generator run by Coolors s.r.l., a small Italian company based in Rome, and it has been a fixture of designers' bookmarks for most of the last decade. The core loop is unchanged: press the spacebar for a new palette, lock the colours you want to keep, press again. Around that loop sit an image picker that pulls a palette from a photo, a gradient maker, a visualiser that drops colours into mock layouts, colour-blindness previews and a library of community palettes. The company says more than eight million people use it; that figure is its own and we could not check it.
The AI layer is newer. Pro includes 3,000 Coolors AI credits a month for a chat assistant that suggests palettes or variations on colours you already have; the help centre says it runs on OpenAI models. It is a convenience rather than the reason to subscribe.
The free plan is usable but tighter than it first looks. Palettes are capped at five colours, you can save ten palettes, five individual colours, one project and one collection, and there are ads. Some checks people assume are free are not: the palette-wide contrast checker is a Pro feature. Pro removes ads, allows up to ten colours, lifts every save limit and adds variations, advanced PDF and code exports, a custom logo on exported PDFs and a private profile.
Pro costs $3 a month billed annually, or $36 a year. The website does not publish a month-to-month price; in the iOS app it is $4.99 a month or $35.99 a year, though that app has not been updated since 2022 and the web app is where the work happens. Payments go through Paddle.
What Coolors will not do is decide for you. It hands you a strip of colours and leaves the job of assigning background, text and accent to you. Designers who know what they want will find it quick and cheap; people who want the tool to make those choices should look at Huemint.
