Overview
Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) is Google DeepMind's premium image generation and editing model, launched in November 2025, with up to 4K output, accurate text in many languages and consistency across multiple characters. Nano Banana 2 has since become the default image model in the Gemini app, so Pro is reached through paid Gemini plans, the Gemini API and Google's enterprise tools.

Nano Banana Pro is Google's strongest image model for text-heavy layouts, infographics and multi-reference edits, with 4K output and Search grounding. Outside testing found it excellent but slow, at 20 seconds to a minute for a 2K image, and biased toward photorealism.
It is no longer Google's default. Nano Banana 2 handles everyday generation in the Gemini app and costs half as much through the API, and Pro now needs a paid Gemini plan in the app or $0.134 an image through the API. Use Pro for the jobs where text and consistency matter; use Nano Banana 2 for volume.
What we found
Nano Banana is Google DeepMind's family of image generation and editing models, and Nano Banana Pro, technically Gemini 3 Pro Image, is the premium member. The original Nano Banana, Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, went viral in August 2025 for quick, consistent photo edits. Pro followed on 20 November 2025, built on Gemini 3 Pro, adding output up to 4K, legible text in many languages, a reasoning step, grounding in Google Search, and consistency across up to five characters and fourteen objects in one workflow.
The most careful outside test remains Max Woolf's December 2025 write-up, titled "Nano Banana Pro is the best AI image generator, with caveats". Woolf found it fixed style-transfer and text cases the original failed, but measured 2K generations taking 20 seconds to a minute because of the thinking step, and found it pushes prompts toward realism, which hurts surreal requests. Woolf also noted that OpenAI's gpt-image-1.5 had overtaken it on LMArena's text-to-image board. Current leaderboard positions could not be checked: the arena site was behind a bot check.
The family has moved on around it. Nano Banana 2, Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, arrived in February 2026 and became the Gemini app's image model; a Lite version followed in June; and the original model was shut down on 2 October 2026. In the app, Nano Banana 2 is available on every plan, while redoing an image with Pro needs a Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra subscription.
Developers pay per image. Through the Gemini API, Pro costs $0.134 an image at 1K or 2K and $0.24 at 4K, with no free API tier, against $0.067 and $0.151 for Nano Banana 2. Every output carries an invisible SynthID watermark, and Google's own limitations list includes small faces, spelling and factual errors in infographics. Pro earns its premium on text-heavy and multi-reference work; for volume, Nano Banana 2 is the sensible default.
