n8n is a source-available workflow automation platform that connects hundreds of apps through a visual node editor, with the rare ability to self-host for full data control and add custom code where the interface runs out. Its native AI and LangChain nodes have made it a favourite for building practical LLM agents, and self-hosting can make it much cheaper than per-task SaaS rivals at volume.
It suits developers, technical teams and ops people who want power and ownership over their automations. Caveats: it is more technical than Zapier or Make, the Business plan is currently self-hosted only, the licence is source-available rather than open source, and Starter and Pro stop at their execution caps. Self-hosting is the big ASEAN win: data stays in-region.
What we found
n8n's valuation more than doubled in seven months. An October 2025 Series C of $180 million, led by Accel with NVIDIA's NVentures and Deutsche Telekom's T.Capital joining, valued the Berlin company at $2.5 billion and took total funding to $240 million. In May 2026 SAP made a strategic investment at a $5.2 billion valuation and signed a multi-year deal to embed n8n inside Joule Studio, its agent-building environment. n8n claims more than 1,400 enterprise customers and 1.7 million monthly active builders; Vodafone and Delivery Hero feature in its case studies.
The product is a visual editor for workflows and AI agents with more than 500 built-in integrations, plus the escape hatch that keeps developers loyal: when the nodes run out, you can drop JavaScript or Python into a Code step or call any HTTP or GraphQL API. AI Agent nodes, MCP support, evaluations and LangSmith tracing make it a common base for LLM agents that touch real business systems.
One correction to the usual billing, and to earlier versions of this page: n8n is not open source. The Community Edition is source-available under n8n's own Sustainable Use License, which allows free use for internal business, non-commercial or personal purposes but not providing it to others commercially, and n8n's documentation explains why it chose not to use an open-source licence. Self-hosting that edition costs nothing beyond infrastructure, with unlimited users and active workflows.
Cloud plans are priced in euros. Starter is €24 a month, or €20 billed annually, for 2,500 executions; Pro is €60, or €50, for 10,000. Business, at €800 a month or €667 billed annually, is currently sold self-hosted only, with a hosted version on a waitlist. On Starter and Pro, users on n8n's community forum report that hitting the monthly execution cap stops workflows until they upgrade. For ASEAN teams, self-hosting keeps data in-region, though free-edition support is the community forum.
