Zapier's AI tools are strongest where its integrations are: an assistant connected through MCP, or an AI step inside a Zap, can reach 9,000+ apps without custom code, and Copilot lowers the bar for building the workflow in the first place. Every plan, including Free, can use Agents, Chatbots, Canvas and MCP within its limits.
The catch is cost visibility. AI steps cost one, three or five tasks depending on the model tier, MCP calls cost two, and Agents are metered separately in activities. Model the task count of an AI-heavy workflow before moving it to production.
What we found
Zapier AI is the AI layer across Zapier, the long-running no-code automation platform from Zapier, Inc. Its AI work began in 2023 with one of the first ChatGPT plugins and a Natural Language Actions API and now has three main parts. Zapier Agents, which grew out of Zapier Central, an AI-bot workspace released in public preview in March 2024, are AI teammates that act across connected apps on command or on a schedule; Zapier describes them as generally available after a May 2025 redesign. Copilot, launched at the ZapConnect conference in September 2025, builds workflows from a plain-English description. Zapier MCP lets assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor call Zapier actions; the vendor counts more than 30,000 actions across 9,000+ apps.
The 2026 change to understand is billing. AI steps, code and the SDK now draw on the same task pool as ordinary Zap steps, and the rate is not flat: an AI step costs one task on a standard model, three on an advanced one and five on a premium one, an MCP call costs two, and a Lead Router step five. Filters, formatters, paths, delays, Tables and Forms use none. Agents and Chatbots sit outside the pool as separately metered add-ons: Agents are free for 400 activities a month, and Agents Pro buys 1,500 for $50 a month, or $33.33 a month billed annually.
Platform plans are priced by task volume. Free covers 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps. Professional starts at $29.99 a month for 750 tasks, or $19.99 billed yearly, and Team at $103.50 a month, or $69 billed yearly, for 25 users. Earlier versions of this page put the Agents add-on at $25 a month and quoted a Trustpilot score and a 30% agent failure rate that we could neither trace nor read today.
For teams already living in SaaS tools, Zapier is a quick way to put AI inside working processes without code. Model choice now drives cost directly, so estimate tasks per run before scaling an AI-heavy Zap.
