Course Hero's value is its enormous library of course-specific material — 184 million documents, including material from Singapore universities and polytechnics — backed by human tutors and an AI assistant. Its business model is the problem: prices are hidden until you sign in, unlocks and questions expire, and Trustpilot reviews are overwhelmingly negative even as the app scores well. Its parent, Learneo, also lost a $75 million copyright verdict in 2026 over material on the platform, which it plans to appeal. What we found
Course Hero is a study-help platform where students find course-specific documents, ask human tutors questions, check textbook solutions and use an AI assistant called Ask AI, which Course Hero says pairs its library with OpenAI's language models. Its library holds 184 million documents and 77 million answered questions from 130,000 institutions, including Singapore Management University, Singapore Polytechnic, SIM and James Cook University's Singapore campus. More than 2,600 tutors answer questions, in as little as 30 minutes according to the company. Flashcards link out to Cram.com, and the Premier Plus bundle adds QuillBot's paraphraser and grammar tools and Symbolab's step-by-step maths solvers.
Course Hero was founded in 2006 by Andrew Grauer, then a college student, and is run by Learneo, Inc., whose other businesses include QuillBot, CliffsNotes, LitCharts, Scribbr and Symbolab. In March 2026 a US federal jury in Connecticut found Learneo liable for 3,015 violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for removing copyright information from Post University's course materials, at $25,000 each, or about $75 million. Learneo said it would appeal; we found no ruling on an appeal.
A free Basic account lets you browse the library, gives two tutor questions valid for 30 days, sells extra questions at $3 each and lets you earn unlocks by uploading your own documents. Premier includes 30 course resources a month, Ask AI, tutors and textbook solutions, and Premier Plus adds QuillBot Premium and Symbolab. Course Hero shows plan prices only after sign-in; its iOS app lists in-app subscriptions from $14.99. Unused unlocks do not carry over, questions expire when a subscription ends, and a money-back guarantee applies within 30 days if you have used no more than five unlocks and one question.
Ratings split sharply: the iOS app rates 4.7 from 65,000 ratings, while Trustpilot shows 1.4 from 1,874 reviews and SmartCustomer 2.1 from 357. Read the expiry rules before subscribing.
