Coursera's assistant is a well-integrated study aid: it answers questions in context, summarises, quizzes you and gives quick AI feedback on assignments, and Coursera's own figures suggest learners who use it pass quizzes more often. It is strictly a paid perk, though — not available to free or trial learners — and it works best in English. Coursera has also changed shape around it, completing its merger with Udemy in May 2026. Worth using if you already pay for Coursera Plus; not a reason to buy it.

Coursera's AI learning assistant, launched as Coursera Coach and now called Coursera AI in its help centre, sits inside courses for paying learners. It answers questions on course pages, videos, readings and labs, summarises lectures and readings, generates practice questions and shows how material applies in the real world, remembering a learner's context and profile, with controls to manage that memory. It also powers role-play and dialogue activities, AI-graded questions and AI feedback on peer-graded assignments, but it is not available inside quizzes or assessments, and availability in the mobile app is limited. It works fully in English and can answer in other languages, though Coursera warns of errors. Coursera says chat history is never used to train AI models. When it expanded Coach in 2024 it named Google's Gemini as the first model to power interactive instruction; it does not say which models run the learner chat today.
Coursera's own 2024 figures for the assistant include more than a million learners, a 9.5% higher quiz pass rate among users, and AI grading that returns feedback in about a minute instead of 15 hours, with 90% of responding learners satisfied with that feedback. These are vendor metrics.
Coursera, based in Mountain View, California, completed an all-stock combination with Udemy on 11 May 2026, making Udemy a subsidiary. It reported about 1.66 million paid subscribers in the second quarter of 2026, up 44%, and invested $100 million in LearnVector, a new AI learning company founded by its co-founder Andrew Ng.
The assistant is not available free or during trials. It comes with Coursera Plus, at $59 a month or $399 a year, with select Professional Certificate subscriptions, and through employers' learning programmes; access opens within a day of the free trial or refund window ending. Individual courses cost $49 to $79 a month.
For learners already paying for Coursera Plus it is a useful study aid; it is not a reason to subscribe on its own.
