Babbel is one of the most structured language apps, with lessons that explain grammar rather than gamify it, and every plan now includes all 14 languages, which makes it better value than it used to be. Babbel Speak brings AI conversation practice, though it is still a beta and launched in only five languages. Ratings are strong across the app stores. The 12-month plan, at $8.95 a month, is the sensible buy; the lifetime plan pays off only for long-term learners. A solid choice for adults who want to understand how a language works.

Babbel is a subscription language-learning app with short, expert-built lessons, speaking practice, grammar explanations and personalised review exercises. Every subscription now unlocks all 14 of its languages, rather than one language per plan. Babbel Speak, launched in September 2025 as a beta powered by OpenAI, lets learners practise open-ended conversations with an AI partner; it started with English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. Babbel Live adds paid virtual classes with human teachers. The company says more than 150 experts have built its 60,000 lessons, and the app carries no ads.
Babbel GmbH was founded in Berlin in 2007 by Thomas Holl, Markus Witte, Lorenz Heine and Toine Diepstraten and has offices in Berlin and New York; Tim Allen is chief executive. It says it has sold more than 25 million subscriptions, and in 2026 it was named to the GSV 150 education list for a third year.
The first lesson of every course is free, along with some speaking practice and podcasts; full access needs a subscription. US prices shown on 1 October 2026 were $15.25 a month on a three-month plan, billed $45.75; $13.45 a month on a six-month plan, billed $80.70; and $8.95 a month on a 12-month plan, billed $107.40. A lifetime plan costs $299.99 once, and a group plan for up to six learners costs $30.95 a month. Babbel often runs promotions, and prices vary by country.
Babbel rates 4.72 on Apple's US App Store from about 755,000 ratings, 4.6 on Google Play from about 1.13 million reviews and 4.4 on Trustpilot from 33,116 reviews.
It suits learners who want structured lessons and grammar rather than games. The 12-month plan gives the best monthly value, and AI conversation practice launched in only five languages.
