There is no CheggMate to buy. The brand Chegg launched with OpenAI in April 2023 disappeared from its filings by mid-2023, and the AI it described became the conversational layer of Chegg Study, sold in the Study Pack with a 20-question monthly cap on study support. That bundle is the thing to judge, and its readable product page publishes no price.
Judge it against free general-purpose chatbots, which Chegg's own filings name as the reason its subscriber base is shrinking. The draw is the expert-solution library and the writing tools; the risk is a parent whose academic business halved in a year.
What we found
CheggMate no longer exists as a named product, and this page records what became of it. Chegg announced CheggMate on 17 April 2023 as an AI study companion built with OpenAI's GPT-4, promising personalised learning pathways, practice quizzes and questions entered as text, photos or diagrams, all backed by Chegg's library of expert-written solutions. Limited early access opened in May 2023. By August the company was describing "the new Chegg experience" instead, and in October 2023 it began rolling out an AI-powered interface across Chegg Study, with the full roll-out planned for early 2024. Chegg's securities filings stop using the CheggMate name after June 2023.
What survives is a feature, not a product. Chegg's annual report for 2025 describes Chegg Study as personalised, step-by-step help powered by AI, computational engines and subject experts, delivered through a conversational experience, and sells it inside the Chegg Study Pack alongside Chegg Writing and Chegg Math. The Study Pack page we could read on 14 October 2026 lists study support capped at 20 questions a month, a math solver with steps and a graphing calculator, and writing tools covering citations, plagiarism and grammar checks and expert proofreading within 48 hours. It shows no price, and other Chegg pages returned a bot check.
The business around it has shrunk fast. Chegg's filings attribute falling traffic and subscribers to students switching to general AI tools such as ChatGPT and to Google's AI Overviews. Revenue fell 39% in 2025, roughly 640 jobs, about 56% of staff, went in two 2025 restructurings, and second-quarter 2026 revenue was half the year before, with language learning and workforce skills now a third of sales. The company received a second New York Stock Exchange notice in July 2026 for trading below $1, though it repaid its remaining convertible notes in September and reports no debt.
