Hi Echo is one of the more polished AI speaking tutors for Chinese learners of English, with detailed pronunciation feedback, IELTS preparation and, since version 4.0, more natural live voice conversation. It is a paid product with opaque tiers — Youdao does not say what each plan includes, and even the monthly price differs between its store listing and description — and complaints centre on trials converting to annual charges. Worth it for committed learners; cancel trials carefully and pick a plan deliberately.

Hi Echo is NetEase Youdao's AI English-speaking tutor, an app in which learners hold spoken conversations with virtual tutors — Echo, Sherry, Daniel and Hannah — and receive scores and corrections on pronunciation down to individual sounds, grammar and phrasing, with AI rewrites of what they said. It covers more than 15 conversation settings and 100 topics across levels from primary school to the workplace, has a children's mode and IELTS speaking practice, and Youdao is an official IELTS partner. Version 4.0, released in September 2026, added real-time voice conversation that can be interrupted, personalised study plans and memory of a learner's preferences, and an update days later added mock job interviews. It runs on Youdao's Ziyue large model, and since July 2024 it has come bundled with Youdao's 听力宝 E6 Pro learning device.
Hi Echo launched in October 2023 and is provided by Beijing NetEase Youdao Computer System Co., part of NetEase Youdao. Youdao said it had close to a million registered users by January 2024 and now calls it the world's first agent speaking tutor, chosen by ten million people — both its own claims. It won a Huawei AppGallery award.
Hi Echo is a paid subscription; the app is a free download, but neither the website nor the App Store listing describes a free tier. In-app purchases on the Chinese App Store include monthly auto-renewal at ¥68 (the store description says ¥168), annual auto-renewal at ¥498, a one-year plan at ¥698, IELTS plans at ¥358 a quarter or ¥998 a year and an SVIP quarter at ¥598. Youdao does not publish what each tier includes, fees are non-refundable once active, and auto-renewal must be cancelled 24 hours ahead.
The App Store rating is 4.5 from 4,416 ratings. Of five Heimao complaints we read, three concerned trials converting into annual charges and two repetitive content. It suits Chinese learners wanting regular speaking practice.
